CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

It's interesting that this was something posted elsewhere and not a screenshot
My thoughts exactly even before I read the "quoted" part. As soon as I read "posted elsewhere on Facebook" with no link or screenshot, my B.S. meter went to 12.

RE: Axanar suing McIntosh .... this will be more fun than watching Fourth of July fireworks!

He wants an apology. He doesn't particularly want to see Alec Peters brought down..

Given all of Alec's behavior in recent months, I'd say an apology shan't be forthcoming. Additionally, Terry's posts seem to have a rather generous amount of malicious venom behind them, so I'm not sure he doesn't want some revenge.

@Jedman67 .... Thanks. But if that was so simple, why couldn't the poster quoting him do that? Sometimes making something look like B.S. is worse than actual B.S. because it unnecessarily distracts from the real issues at hand.

@Firebird .... Agreed, it does look like a revenge move. What is it they used to say? If you're looking for revenge, dig two graves first.

*shrug*. I was browsing through his stuff on FB during lunch and I screencapped some interesting remarks. I'm sure I could find more if I wanted to.

EDIT: Like this gem from AP in response to a post by Gabe K.

I think I said that earlier in this thread, but the significance of screenshots as evidence seems to be way overrated amoung the general populace. Anyone with basic Photoshop skills can have anyone say anything in a matter of minutes.

Indeed..........neither Lord Alec nor any of his Axalytes have the good sense that God gave goats though - they're too stupid to try and if they did, they'd be found out quickly I think (plus, I highly doubt Bawden would let them if he even has any pull still).

On the flipside of the coin, with as arrogant and abrasive as Terry is, he's doesn't strike me as being that stupid. If he wants revenge or merely wants to throw a little salt in the wound, I don't think he'd fake screenshots or anything for that matter - it wouldn't do near as much damage as I think he wants to incur.

If you know how to use facebook, you can easily search for key phrases from the screenshot, in order to find the original post. I doubt it could be used as evidence in court without some corroborating evidence that it wasn't altered. In this case i'd be more than happy to paste the fb permalink for either post if you'd like.

And as someone whose been using photoshop for 20 years, I would say that it's not quite so simple to doctor screencaps of facebook posts without leaving some fingerprints.

Now you've just started a new game.
But you didn't do a very good job matching the Facebook font aspects in your Photoshop; even on a cursory inspect it looks suspect. . As a previous poster said, it takes a while to really make it look legit. Also, the one thing a screenshot does is give an interested party the ability to narrow down the search parameters to a particular date/time range, so they can (with a warrant or subpoena to Facebook) find the actual post in a backup or archive; and further verify that at least it WAS posted by the account.

The simplest way to fake Facbook post would be to write your own post on the site saying whatever you want, screengrab that, and marry it to the header of a screengrab of an actual LFIM post. Perfect match font and format wise.

Not if it has been deleted. Or if it was never really posted at all.

No, this wasn't directed at you personally, just a general observation that screenshots aren't really more conclusive than mere quotes from posts.

What kind of “fingerprints” do you mean?

There's also the metadata; that can be used to indicate the presence of a photoshop edit.

Sure. Or you could right-click on pretty much everything in your browser, click “Inspect”, change what you want to change in the HTML code and screenshot that.

Not if it is a screenshot of your photoshopped work. ;)

What kind of “fingerprints” do you mean?
artifacts, font usage, spacing, metadata.
I didn't say it's impossible; it's not too difficult, if you have the patience, to match font, format and spacing; to carefully remove any artifacts from occurring when saving the edited image (usually only with JPEG) and to edit the metadata to suggest a screencap rather than an edited file. Usually anyone not too familiar with photoshop can make a number of amateur mistakes that are easily discovered. As someone said elsewhere, the mere existence of a screecapture is likely not admissible as evidence by the courts without corroboration - facebook archive, for example.

nothing is 100% foolproof :p

I know we are taking the piss here, but I would love to see a full length Lego Star Trek fan film, that would be amazing, and if we can have a Lego Batman movie, why the hell not a Lego Star Trek fan film.
