CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Fine, but I'm not entirely convinced that there's no way the IP holders can enforce the guidelines retroactively. They don't have to un-make already made films...just take down the non-compliant ones.

Exactly. They can send a C&D & takedown notices re: any existing fanfilm that doesn't meet the guidelines.

In a private email, an enraged Trek-fan blames Axanar for triggering the Paramount/CBS crackdown on fan films.

Uh, no -- this was inevitable. If it hadn't been Axanar, it would have been Renegades or Continues.

The new fan-film guidelines are draconian, to say the least. They are simply not fair to the fans who have worked so hard for so long to respect the franchise.

And they retroactively ban almost all of the best fan films already made.

Sorry, guys -- but somebody upstairs still isn't paying attention.

Once again, Axanar isn't to blame. RMB is signing the same song on Twitter.

I posted a response to Gerrold, let's see if it stays:

Well, there we go. Alec got the guidelines he has been clamoring for. If people don't like it, they can take it up with him. I mean, he'll deflect, of course, but it is his fault, and anyone with a modicum of intelligence will know it.

Gerrold, as usual, is full of shit. He was ASKING FOR THE RULES. He even said, SOMETHING LIKE STAR WARS. Which this is BETTER--a whole 10 minutes more of story.

What fucks him personally, and why I suspect he hates the rules, no one who as worked on Official Star Trek can do a fan film. Which is all he does now.

He is full of shit.

On the upside, we'll get fan productions that focus heavily on the inexpensive aspects of the production: writing. While I like fancy special effects, and sweeping visuals, the story and characterizations are far more important. They're also the least expensive aspect of any production.

What a sad day for the established fan film productions. Would it be a good idea to hurry and download all episodes of Continues and New Voyages before they're gone?

I expect to see more "pew pew pew" stories with these new guidelines in place.

This would probably be the best time to do it, yes.

Well, shoot...if that's the only thing that's important then why are we all complaining? All the fan film producers can just go into prose fan fiction...until some greedy idiot manages to ruin that.

Yes, the writing is important, but the whole point of these fan films was to give us Star Trek to watch, and the Star Trek most of us enjoyed watching usually comes in hour or two-hour installments. These guidelines reduce them to TAS episodes. I hate TAS.

Perhaps, but with such limited production budgets, they'll also have to try harder.

What I was saying is that writing is the least expensive aspect of the production, and it often suffered in the face of authentic sets and beautiful visuals. Now they'll have to focus more on that writing if they hope to keep the viewer's attention.

Speaking of writing.......the BS that passed for it in Prelude et al. makes the limited amount of writing contained in the fabled FASA supplements of yore look Oscar-worthy..........
