CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Well, that kills Axanar, at least such as it was allegedly going to be. And I did LOL at the bit about not allowing anyone who worked on official DVD releases being allowed to make fan films. That right there just torpedoed Burnett and Peters. It also probably means Burnett will be barred from working on any Trek in any official capacity again.

The real tragedy now is that they've effectively ended fan films as we have come to know them and are probably thrilled with themselves, the assholes they are.

It'll be interesting to hear what Cawley, Broughton and Migogna have to say about all this.

Maybe this is the prelude to settlement? And while I have no problems with the guidelines, which I think are quite generous and any creative filmmaker can make work for them, fuck that narcissist for ruining it for others.

As many said. Be careful what you wish for.

If this means New Voyages, Continues and a host of others are dead then I don't think many are going to be happy.
New Voyages seems to be closing up shop. The website is down and James made a statement on Facebook that stated he was moving on.

On paragraph 7 of those guidelines.... With interpretation for its vagueness.

So for example - we couldn't have an scene in which Federation school kids were taught about the biology of say the Andorian race.
No scenes with the crew giving a toast fallen comrades.
No expressions of proper outrage(thanks, America, you prudes)
No stories about addiction.
No stories containing hate... But how are we do tell stories about overcoming hate if there isn't any in the first place?
No sex - Boring and childish.
No characters breaking laws - who's laws exactly?
Nothing offensive... yeah good luck with that one.

Sad to say that paragraph 7 kills off many of my more serious character development ideas for my CGI series...

Maybe?!!!

I mean, I'm coming from the vantage of never having made or conceived making a fan film so I will honor as totally valid if fan film makers' opinions are totally different from mine, but to my own uneducated examination... I was expecting the possibility of far far worse so this list is looking, as you mentioned, generous and workable. Don't anyone shoot me if I'm way off base on this okay?
[most excellent expletive] that narcissist for ruining it for others.
<sigh> yeah

And Continues, if i'm not mistaken. AFAIK, Vic has done some voicework for Star Trek Online recently.

I think that as long as the disclaimer and the financials are in order, one can probably skirt the other issues as long as it's not too explicit - example, Lolani would probably infringe on the sex, hate and violence prohibitions, but as there is no explicit or implied actual sex, CBS would probably look the other way. OTOH, I can't imagine that any of the major producers would risk facing legal action, so without at least an "unofficial" nod of approval I'd guess most people would shut down.
Does #4 preclude making custom uniforms?

Well! We are going to have a lot to talk about on Sunday.

Quick preliminary thoughts:
  • Good-bye reprising roles (hey, we mentioned that)
  • Good-bye Queen Bitch Vulcan of the Federation of whatever the utterly out of place slur was
  • Good-bye merch and any corporeal perks (hey, we mentioned that)
  • Good-bye serious fundraising (Hello, Tommy Kraft and his ilk)
  • Good-bye series and continuing story lines
