I can't get past Vic as Kirk and it keeps me away from STC. I really want to like the shows, they put a lot of love in them but something about his mannerisms and voice are unappealing to my tastes.
Thats too bad. I don't mind Vic as Kirk which is something I can't say about anyone else I've seen in the role after Shatner.
For me, there's no other way to "continue" the 60's series without the actor sharing some of Shatner's mannerisms without it becoming a parody, and I think Vic is very successful at doing this. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief and accept Vic as Kirk but I can't say the same about other actors who've played the role.
this is a really nice mini, and its gives you hope for New Voyages going forward, but in the two episodes ive seen him as Kirk he has been unimpressive both times. The first one Kirk is being mentally tortured, so that may explain it, but his second episode (the first one filmed) he comes across as a boy pretending to be Kirk. Its actually like he is playing someone pretending to be Kirk. But to date, this is still the closest to an actor actually playing Kirk:
I think I'd much rather Vic Mignona played Kirk rather than played Shatner. He seems to be channelling a gestalt version of a pinch of Kirk, a dash of Shatner and a smidgen of Picard and some other influences.

I'm hoping Vic will someday find his character of Kirk; I do believe he has the range to do so. I agree none has capture those elements yet because they're too invested on being William Shatner. No fan film actor has been able to capture the charm or sparkle that Shatner and Pine bring to the role of Kirk.
That's ridiculous since Gross is the appropriate age to play Kirk from that era. No one here can say Vic is the appropriate age to play James Kirk from Star Trek from that 60's era. Come on. Give me a break. Vic would be more appropriate for the character of Kirk in The Wrath of Khan era than of Star Trek.Agreed, Gross channels too much Richie Cunningham for my taste.
^^^Respectfully disagree.

In NV Gross just doesn't display the "it" a lead needs.
The orchestra on episode 6 was about the same size as on the score to episode 4 "The White Iris". Episode 5 had a slightly smaller group with fewer strings. More like the group that played on TOS score like "The Doomsday Machine" or "Friday's Child".The orchestra seems to grow for each new episode. Word gets around and I'm sure being a musician on an award-winning web series looks pretty good on a resume, not to mention the appreciation of the musical style.

I have to say the music is superb in "Come Not Between the Dragons." I like how you worked in Fred Steiner's "Empath" themes.
The Empath was scored by George Duning. He was the eldest of all the TOS composers but, in many ways, his scores are the most "modern". Anyway, I didn't incorporate any Empath themes into the score, I only transcribed and re-recorded that one Empath cue with a few alterations to fit our scene. However, I do use two of Sandy Courage's motifs. One is the "Kirk" motif that Courage uses all over the place in WNMHGB, and the other is a bit of Courage's alternate theme, also from WNMHGB.I have to say the music is superb in "Come Not Between the Dragons."
