Time For Bond to Retire?

Did you see Hiddleston in The Night Manager? It's practically a 6 hour audition tape for the Bond role.
No I haven't. But I do have an open mind and if he really can pull off a good Bond, that would be great.

But in the movie you refer to, did Hiddleston seem more like a Brosnan/Moore type Bond or a Connery/Craig type? Be honest.

The seriousness of Craig with more of the suaveness of Brosnan. Not as ruffian as Connery.

Am I the only one who loved For Your Eyes Only? As far as Roger Moore movies go, it had very little of the often lame humor associated with Bond of the era and the gadgetry was basically much non-existent. It was pretty much a straightforward Bond spy-thriller without the filler, and I consider it an under-rated gem and one of my personal favorites.

I like that one, too, and it's a textbook example of the swinging pendulum I mentioned before. The previous film, MOONRAKER, was arguably the goofiest and most outlandish of the Moore films, so they attempted a course correction by doing a (literally) more down-to-Earth spy thriller with FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. Can't remember how it was received generally, just that my college friends and I enjoyed it, although we all called it "For Your Thighs Only" because of the, um, memorable movie poster. :)

I like it a lot, mainly for the same reasons you've cited.

If they'd followed TSWLM with FYEO instead of Moonraker and Moore had then quit, I think his tenure would have been remembered a lot more fondly. He'd have made 4 films, 3 of which were very good, IMHO (only Golden Gun letting down the side and it's not awful either), instead of a total of 3 good movies out of 7. No Moonraker, no Octopussy and no View to a Kill, his CV looks a lot stronger.

As long as Bond is played by the right actor, Conery, Craig, or similar type, the movies will never get old.

Wait, Tom Hiddleston is being considered for Bond? That seems like it's taking the character into the wrong direction to me. He seems like a good actor, but much like a Trek captain character, it takes more than just a good actor to play the role. Tom. like all of the actors who have played Bond, seems like he'd handle the suave part of the character just fine. But when it comes to personal charisma and projecting an air of dangerousness, like all of the Bonds EXCEPT Connery and Craif, I think he'd have real trouble.

I don't know if Hiddleston would be the best choice but I'd have no objections on the face of it if he is the next Bond (whether now or subsequent to another Craig movie, if that's still a possibility). I disagree, though, that only Connery and Craig could project dangerousness--Timothy Dalton did a good job of that in his films, especially in the first outing. But "dangerousness" is not sacrosanct for Bond. I just revisited my favourite Bond film story (though not my favourite Bond film--that would be Goldfinger): On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Lazenby does a much better job than he's generally given credit for and he presents a vulnerability that is A) essential to the story and B) might not have been possible for Connery to pull off at that stage, given the general direction of his performances as Bond (he might have managed it before You Only Live Twice or Thunderball). A Connery who wasn't becoming bored with the character, Dalton, or Craig (his interaction with Vesper Lynd is the most analogous to Lazenby's Bond and Tracy) would catapult OHMSS to the top of my personal Bond list, but Lazenby's portrayal is still good enough to keep the film in my top five. While I enjoyed Moore and Brosnan as well in the role, I don't think either had the range to pull off OHMSS as well as the others.

I agree almost 100% with this but I think Brosnan would've played OMHSS quite effectively. Don't forget that he too lost a wife and had that to draw upon.

Easily the best Moore Bond movie. Probably the only one I'd say was good.

Brosnan ? An excellent Bond, hamstrung by poor films.

Die Another Day was pretty bad but not Because of Brosnan. In fact he's the only reason I watch. I loved Pierce as Bond shame he never got to do one more grounded in reality film. He deserved it.

I haven't watched it since I saw it at the cinema (it's on my shelf, but I've not gotten to it), so my memory is a bit hazy (to be honest, I mostly remember Halle Berry replicating the Ursula Andress bikini scene and some ridiculous "ice racing" in an "invisible car"). I am currently making my way through my Bond collection (though it's slow going--I'm also balancing parenthood, a job and a PhD programme). I'll be sure to keep an open mind.

Don't forget the cameo appearance by Madonna. :)

I seemed to have touched a nerve. Interesting responses, for the most part. I'm 43 and my dad introduced me to Bond when I was a kid. I was a huge fan until recently. Now, I still watch them but they seem tired to me.
What did you expect? Everyone to fall in lock step behind you?

Bond, like all media franchises has to evolve with the times. The Daniel Craig era is ending, so what happens next will be important. Whoever is selected to be the next Bond will be a large part of what happens next. Their style of acting, comedy skill & action abilities will be huge contributors to who that Bond character will be and the style of the movies they make.

The Daniel Craig era was hit and miss, so was the Brosnan era and the Moore era.Connery had the most reliably strong films (in my opinion) but that lightning is tough to catch in the bottle over and over.
