Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

People here are generally supportive of the Abramsverse which eschews Prime canon in favor of a rebooted reality with the freedoms of creating a completely new story because Prime canon, as Daystrom put it, "simply got in the way." Prime canon is that ensign in M5's bug zapper. I've called bullshit on such restrictions of canon when you have a whole universe to play with, but here we are.
I am not sure how that generalization comes about since there is a large mixture of opinions, and canon can be both an asset and a restriction, as continuity can come back and bite you. And this isn't restricted to Trek as there are a number of shows and movies that rely upon fast and loose continuity or the audience not paying attention to make it work.

I personally think that the Abramsverse presents opportunities to explore the familiar without previously established restrictions on technology or outcome. But, the couldn't even get that right with the USS Kelvin and its uniforms, phasers, and design:brickwall:

Karl Urban: "Yeah, that would be great. I love when he reappears, and he's got this huge beard and this big medallion around his chest -- and his chest hair! I love that! I actually put a nod to that in Star Trek Beyond. You'll see at the end of the film, I'm wearing an open shirt, and I've got a medallion on. Like, not a big one, but it's there, and it's a direct nod to DeForest [Kelley]".

Wow. Fantastic, Urban! It is a great tribute.
So, the scene with Bones, Kirk and Spock looking at something, that may be the new Enterprise, this scene is the end of the film.

What surprised me reading this interview was that Karl Urban almost didn't appear in this movie because apparently he wasn't contractually obligated to do it. I thought all the principal actors had signed a three movie deal back in 2008?

"Paramount was again only looking to give nominal raises based on the original contracts, but some of the stars and their representatives argued that seven years had passed since the deals were struck back in 2007. Under California law, a personal services contract cannot bind someone for more than seven years. That meant the old deals arguably were invalid as of 2014."

in short, their contracts were no longer valid because too much time had passed between movies so they had to make the contracts again and adjusted the paycheck for the actors too, especially the ones who became more bigger names compared to 2007.

I wonder what would have happened if Urban didn't sign for more movies.
I also know that Zoe for example apparently faced the usual sexist-hollywood drama when she told the producers of her movies that she was pregnant and they wanted to write one of her characters out (she never said which one)
mind you, she was pregnant in the year/months she had no movie to film (The only one that almost started to film when she was preggo was Avatar but no one believed Cameron would seriously start filming in October 2014 LOL), so basically the 'issue' of the studios she works with was only 'concerns' she wouldn't be in 'perfect shape' months after giving birth, (and possibly the fact they'd need to pay the nanny, and seeing how cheap Paramount is with their stars...)

You never know what can happen in hollywood..

eta: I also wonder if Pegg getting the extra job as a writer too was part of his upgraded contract to get a raise.

The backswept nacelle pylons of Beyond's Enterprise remind me of Tim Flattery's original 2007 concept art. The look cooler at these angles than the (mostly obscured) shot of the Enterprise docking at Yorktown.
I don't know... I'm not convinced that the pylons are swept back. In the Yorktown Tube, I think there is a fisheye effect there making it look weird. The attachment point to the nacelle looks like it's in the same place.

And I still don't like the new impulse engines! :)

Had a dream last night that I saw Star Trek Beyond.

The Enterprise was destroyed and Kirk and the crew were separated during some conflict. Then they started to disappear one by one from the action until it was revealed that they were secretly gathering together onboard the Enterprise-A which was a gaudy looking metallic ship. They then did battle with a large space complex and won. Overall, I remember the movie being pretty mundane.

Can't wait to see how much of this pans out.

In the top image we're looking up directly underneath, the bottom pic, she's tilted towards the camera, you can see hull detail peeking around the side of the engineering section.

With the exception of using the theme from TMP (which was, of course, used for the TNG theme song) and the reusage of the Klingon theme for Worf.
Agreed entirely, I would *love* it if he started using the TMP theme. I'm one of those people for whom the TMP theme is actually the most defining piece of Star Trek music, even more so than the original theme (aside from those first few notes).

I wouldn't expect an overt usage in Beyond (and maybe wouldn't want it, considering what they did to the TOS theme), but I can imagine in a quiet scene it would be nice to hear the TMP theme referenced. The perfect moment would be when they get their new ship at the end of the film.

I spent ages thinking "Who is that guy in the top right supposed to be?"

And it's only upon seeing these posters reduced in size that I realised that the glowing body in the foreground is the Starfleet insignia!

And they made it blue for kirk for some reason

It's probably already been posted, but here's the epic soundtrack for the new Beyond trailer:

Thanks for this! In that article is says one of the concessions made by the actors was that to get a pay increase some of them had to sign on for a potential 4th movie. I know Pine and Quinto had to, I wonder if any of the others did?

I'm glad Urban decided to come back. I had read in another interview a few years back he wasn't satisfied with McCoy's role in Into Darkness.
