Sure, they're the two biggest superheroes. They're also held to some weird standard that Marvel isn't held to. The fight in Capt. America CW was more senseless and tacked-on than anything in BVS, but hey, its Supes and Bats so I'm expecting light-hearted but also the best movie ever made since Citizen Kane!

The two biggest superhero icons on earth did better than Ant-Man and the other new kids on the block. Good for the two biggest superhero icons.

Then let's look at the reception. And word of mouth. How else do we want to measure this?

It's Superman and Batman. Ask Paul Dini just how easy this is.

It didn't do Avengers numbers, it did better than Marvel average.

On May 14th, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice officially left wide release in the United States and Canada, falling from 1,593 theater locations to 744.

It lasted seven weeks, and made $328 million. The most comparable film in terms of release was last year's Furious 7, which lasted nine weeks and made $350 million in that timeframe.

So it did F&F 7 numbers

Exactly. DC didn't want better than Marvel average, they wanted Avengers, Iron Man 3, AoU, and Civil War numbers.

Civil War is looking like it's gonna just barely hit Iron Man 3 numbers.

How come nobody is considering that as a disappointment when it was touted as an Avengers film, it was well received by both critics and audiences(much better than Age of Ultron), and yet it's nowhere near hitting Avengers numbers?

^ "Nowhere near"? It's made close to 80% of Ultron's take a year after that movie, with a solid hit in Ant-Man in between. BvS, OTOH, was the first DC movie in three years - far more time to recover from audience fatigue. (Marvel Studios released five movies between MoS and BvS). Also, Ultron rated 88% of Civil War's Metacritic score, hardly a blowout. Finally, it's entirely reasonable to assume that by opening first, and so soon before Civil War, BvS somewhat depressed CW's potential ticket from casual audiences who take more time to recharge between superhero movies.

In other words: keep digging! You've almost hit upon that ladder to the plateau of good perspective! ;)

Yeah, $200+ million under the take of the previous Avengers movie, and $400+ million under the $1,6 billion estimates prior to the release of the movie.

BvS is $130 million under the "shoulda made a billion" estimate.

Tell, me again - when did Batman vs. Superman break 1 billion again?

[ Lets see: Batman vs Superman made $871 million worldwide in 63 days of release at a studio published budget of $250 million. B vs S is also pretty much out of theatres domestically as of 5/27 too.

Captain America: Civil War has made 1.1 Billion in 24 days of release also at a studio published budget of $250 million. It also still has a few weeks to earn more.

Gee - I wonder which studio is more disappointed in their respective film's Box Office take here?... ;) ]

BvS made 87% of its expected take and it's "a disaster".
CW will make 75% of its expected take by the end of its run and it's "a great success".

BvS is lambasted for not living up to expectations, while CW isn't even though CW is more off the pre-release estimates. Just seems like a double standard to me

the $1,6 billion estimates prior to the release of the movie.
Citations, please. As in, citations, plural, since you said estimates, plural. Those estimates sound darned high to me.

BvS made 87% of its expected take and it's "a disaster".
No, it's a disappointment, and the poor audience reception doesn't bode well for the Justice League movies. The only people calling BvS a box office "disaster" are those putting it in other peoples' mouths as a straw man.

What's more important is how much profit both movies made after covering their respective production and marketing budgets. Now obviously none of us will ever know the real numbers there, but for me it's very telling that we constantly heard bad news and unconvincing spin about Warner Bros.' reaction to BvS' take while Disney/Marvel's reaction toward CW seems to be far more positive.
