CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

What's kinda weird also is that the Newsweek article makes no mention of any taking of money by Axanar for studio-prohibited purposes; thereby leaving Axanar in the readers' minds a fan film comparable to all others.

And allowing Alec to be portrayed as a crusader for guidelines without pointing out that everything he is arguing for now, he just grossly violated, leading the whole situation? Irresponsible journalism.

The only book the two of them wrote: Inside Star Trek. In short, they dispute the claimed volume of mail received and postulate that it was color TV giant RCA which influenced NBC to keep the show on the air for a 3rd season due to how well the show did with color TV households.

Just to add ...

When's the last time you saw mainstream journalists (present company excepted) do any real journalism?

Without disputing the fluffery of most short-article-driven material these days, I think I hear real journalism on various radio/TV programs, I have not completely given up hope. Not wanting to divert the thread into any political discussion, though.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Nick. I've always enjoyed productions from Intrepid and hope they continue.
My thoughts after reading today's news from this page were left with a shade of dread. I've been involved in consensus meetings before and seen them end up with a statement that goes something like this:

I have met with all the concerned parties in the matter, it was very productive. We went over the pro's and cons of each issue and evaluated the correct course of action.
As follows.........................

Two days latter when you get the memo with the new policy change and the correct course had nothing to do with it, yet there you are, listed as one of the department heads that came up with and agreed to it.
I do hope this is far from the case.

You are right, though. This is what always happens when someone pokes a stick that forces corporate higher ups to take up formal positions because their line managers "are stuck".

I wrote it down in the Wizard Glick of Pe'ters story 60 pages or so back.
I've had 42 years of dealing with corporate politics and you see the same thing over and over again. So tell me, who appointed Peters as the liaison between fan films and C/P?
Anybody, anybody... Bueller!

I'd like to add, that Alec was consistently gracious with me, and didn't object to anything I was saying.

I'm also going to stick my neck out here and say I absolutely believe that there needs to be limits set on crowdfunding, assuming it's not gone completely (though I imagine it is). Want to crowdfund your own product, have at it. Want to use somebody else's IP? You do it on our terms or not at all. I believe that quite strongly, though obviously I respect that there are others who feel differently.

In case you are interested, at this point, 5 of the 8 fan-films Alec stated he had talks with regarding crafting guidelines have either distanced, disavowed, or denied their participation in the effort. I can't help but think that number will go higher by day's end.

Probably won't stop him from making the true statement he had talks with them if he got any response at all, without indicating the specifics of each interaction or the position of those organizations wrt/ to being serviced by his representation.

Perhaps you could float a thought that if a project makes it through the review process one might presume they would face, then the studios might consider allowing on a case by case basis crowdfunding up to a certain level, within explicit guidelines such as indicating they are sanctioned, that they follow guidelines about what the money is spent on, auditing, performance (say finish within 6 months or close down and refund), etc?

I imagine this might be seen as a burden on the studios, but it would move the crowdfunding issue to *after* the screening.

LIKED x a Million :-D

Well I certainly didn't mean any offense, so I'm sorry that it came across badly. I guess the phrase parses differently to different people.
That's okay. It has a lot of historical context in the United States that's still deeply disturbing. That's why I misinterpreted the intention of your post (it reminded me of earlier in the thread when people were wrongly comparing Axanar's team to Nazi Germany). But no harm done, and happy to move on. :)
