CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

I get requests for information from writers with Buzzfeed (260 MILLION monthly readers) and Yahoo (6 F'n BILLION readers a month.) That's what I mean by legitimate.

Its too bad the writers at these places aren't named by him., He is claiming that their large audiences prove he must be speaking the truth.

As reporters (maybe) they should find that enough reason to consider your counter.

Thing is, it was coming sooner or later, Peters or otherwise. Renegades was getting bigger. You have Michael Dorn trying to do a Worf show. I think if not Axanar than at some point someone else would have gone too far. It's perhaps a testament to dear Alec's ego that he got there first!

Well, Renegades announced they were stopping after their third episode (including the pilot) once the new CBS Star Trek series was announced; and the Michael Dorn 'Worf series' pitch was DOA (Dorn wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel - he made a pitch, they sad 'no thanks' - end of story.)

And the other two high profile successful crowdfund group (STC and ST:NV/PII) were both staying WELL within the 'unofficial' boundaries - Hell, STC applied for and GOT 501c status and also changed there logo at CBS request. Even Tommy Craft (who's 'Horizon' is probably the overall best done ST fan film on a technical level overall) was staying well within boundaries and did (IMO) a WAY BETTER job then 'Prelude to Axanar' on a 'more bang per dollar raised/spent on the production level'.

But seriously, the rest of the high profile fan film groups were continuing to 'play by the rules' well. It was Alec Peters who started merchandizing the hell out of his 'production' going beyond the 'we have 50 Tier 3 donors? Time to make/send the 50 donor perks' crowdfunding paradigm with his free form 'donor store' and ridiculous items (which he actually licensed himself to a third party company) like 'Axanar Coffee'.) Then we get to the 'Producer salary' he was drawing while NOT a member of the Hollywood PGA guild (not to mention the deferred salary his girlfriend at the time was drawing for 'Perk fulfillment); etc.
^^^
Alec Peters didn't just go a bit over the line - he went WAY over and was often boastful about it. To say "well, some group would have crossed that line in a major way at some point is basically ignoring the fact that for 10 years no other group had (or if they did, once CBS contacted them - they complied with CBS request.)

Reps from CBS has said they told Alec Peters they were not happy or condoning of the way he was going with Axanar at a Las Vegas Star Trek Convention per this Wrap article:
http://www.thewrap.com/how-1-1-million-star-trek-fan-movie-has-escaped-studio-shutdown-so-far/

“CBS has not authorized, sanctioned or licensed this project in any way, and this has been communicated to those involved,” a representative from the network told TheWrap. “We continue to object to professional commercial ventures trading off our property rights and are considering further options to protect these rights.”

So for Alec Peters to claim "I was never warned/contacted by CBS..." is just BS. What Peters got is exactly what Tommy Kraft got when Tommy Kraft announced he was planning a sequel to his 'Horizon' film. The big difference here? Kraft LISTENED TO and COMPLIED with CBS request -- Peters just shrugged and went back to what for him was "business as usual" -- hence the ultimate "Hey you've gone too far" notification of CBS and Paramount filing a joint lawsuit.

"If you really like something, you can steal it", that's what Axanar's latest defense breaks down to: Peters really likes Star Trek so it's okay if he steals it and makes money on it. Well that and "Mommy thinks I'm really special so nah-nah :p"

This is some shit toddlers know is wrong, but a 50 something man is using this as a legal defense. Saints above and sinners below, I can't believe the childish nonsense I'm reading that is be submit to the court.

I would give my last cent to see Klausner's face when he reads that. I would go into debt to see how it went over at Loeb & Loeb.

Zavin (on intercom): Miss Moneypenny?
Secretary Moneypenny: Yes, Mr. Zavin?
Zavin: Please hold all my calls for a while and if you could make sure the Office Manager orders another gross of tissue boxes, that would be terrific, thanks.
Moneypenny: Something wrong, sir? I'm sorry if something is saddening you. Shall I get Mrs. Zavin on the line?
Zavin: Au contraire, it's not sadness at all. I'm weeping with laughter, that's all.
Moneypenny: Oh, thank goodness! I was concerned.
Zavin: Thank you. Oh, and Miss Moneypenny?
Moneypenny: Sir?
Zavin: Could you have the interns come into my office, please? How many are there again?
Moneypenny: We have sixteen. Four are 1Ls, seven are 2Ls, and the remaining five are recent graduates studying for the Bar exam. Shall I have Maintenance bring in some extra chairs?
Zavin: Yes, that would be terrific, thank you. I'll make the additional copies myself.

~~~~~~ Short musical interlude while Zavin makes copies. VFX shows a slow motion montage of photocopier scenes, interspersed with brief law school flashbacks (note to self: check for public domain status of the John Housman classic film, The Paper Chase). Muzak version of The Girl from Ipanema plays softly in the background~~~~~~~
Interns arrive as the last of the chairs are placed by Maintenance, which then bows out. Interns are of varying ages, etc. It is a diverse bunch. They all sit and look expectantly at Zavin who hands them each a copy of the answer and an opened tissue box with the first tissue thoughtfully pulled up and within reach.
Zavin: Welcome to Legal Practice 101. Last person to use up a tissue box wins a bonus!
~~~~~~Short musical interlude as interns read frantically. Tissues fly. Muzak version of Eye of the Tiger plays in the background, building to a crescendo as two interns, a man and a woman battle to the end (note to self: check for availability of Scarlett Johansson and a grizzled actor, maybe Mickey Rourke or Nick Nolte?)~~~~~~

The music ends.

Zavin: Well, I'm afraid no one won that round. But don't worry. The sushi's on me!

Fade to black.

This needs to be on "film."

Let me put it this way. Axamonitor is a blog that gets around 13K visitors a month. They have never once contacted me. On the other hand, I get requests for information from writers with Buzzfeed (260 MILLION monthly readers) and Yahoo (6 F'n BILLION readers a month.) That's what I mean by legitimate. They're obviously not as reliable as me since I'm actually connected to the production and speak to the filmmakers and legal team every day.

Everyone at Axanar seems to be both a drama AND a size queen.

Thanks for the vote of confidence in AxaMonitor, T'Bonz!

I noted in the comments on your TrekToday article that Morey Altman, Axanar's international PR representative, ...

This is a lot of uniques, considering how narrow the range of interest should be.

Carlos, do you have an analytics tool running so you can see how many are coming from studio domains, news domains, etc.? Just for your own encouragement of course... would not recommend publishing any specifics that could discourage any group of readers.

Michael Dorn is advocating/pitching his idea to CBS, not trying to make his own fan film.

@carlosp Great response!

The lawsiut will eventually "go away" in terms of reaching a resolution. But it certainly is not "going way" and letting Axanar and Alec Peters off the hook and free to do whatever he pleases.

Indeed AP's countersuit is certainly not going to make CBS less adversarial.
