CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

To be fair, you can't expect someone to use a quote in a trade publication to be the deciding factor to shut down the production. CBS should have sent them a C&D or at least a registered letter to warn them about proceeding etc.. Now, perhaps, CBS did communicate this to Alec in some official form, we don't know, or will probably ever know if that happened or not.
I am sure he heard that in person.

A comment was left on the STC Facebook page saying in part: And I just hope that The Production That Should Not Be Named hasn't completely screwed over you and the other productions by goading CBS into issuing draconian guidelines.

Vic responded with: That is EXACTLY what has happened.

So Vic at least seems to think that the fanfilm productions are going to get screwed. I wonder if he's just assuming or if he's been given some advance info? STC certainly does appear to have contacts in CBS, after all.

I wonder if JJ and Lin are regretting becoming publicly embroiled in CBS/P's lawsuits. IMO, it seems like all both accomplished is briefly enabling an egomaniac to new heights of fustercluck lunacy (which may be a silver lining since AP and his attorneys have taken the opportunity to double down on AP's delusions ...lol).

As a big fan of STC I find this quite disquieting.

That said, unless Vic has advance knowledge, we mighn't have to automatically assume the worst. AP has goaded CBS/P into establishing guidelines, but we have no idea what those guidelines might be.

STC has a bit of padding here in terms of having their next couple of episodes being funded already, but beyond that it gets murky. There was some mention of a possible generous backer near the tail end of their recent Indiegogo drive, but no elaboration.

I'm thinking AP, despite his ego and big mouth, might sense he is indeed royally screwed and like a petulant spoiled brat he's getting a measure of perverse satisfaction torpedoing everyone else.

The thing is, Axanar's blog sounded so diplomatic, no matter how forced. The equivalent of "can't we all just get along?" I was really thinking this would have been the end of it.

Even if CBS and Paramount won, what exactly would they win? They’d protect their intellectual property, but from whom?

From companies making a knock off and cashing in out and frauding gullible fans by the use of the Trek brand.

Together, they both put pressure on the studio to settle this case amicably so that their movie could premiere without every other news story between now and July (or January!) mentioning that Paramount and CBS were suing Star Trek fans.

Ego much, shithead?

From that blog: "That wasn’t Star Trek! Star Trek brings fans together. This lawsuit was tearing fandom apart!"
Oh, the Hubris. Oh, Alec it's not the lawsuit that tears fandom apart, it's you thinking that the future of fandom is in your holy hands. (while I really don't care if Axanar ever gets made, all I've read about Alec makes me detest him)

Distinctly remember this tactic being used by thugs in junior high school. After everything is forced to be how they want it and all the critics are threatened into silence the thugs make nice in front of the uninformed external watchers, saying "why don't we all just get past this, can't we all just get along?". Come to think of it, its a popular tactic in bureaucracies, too.

So much about how an organization behaves stems from the mentality of its leaders.
