He obviously hasn't finished that bottle of Jameson in his office then.
Don't you think that's unlikely?

This. JJ and Justin are worried about the way "CBS SUES THE FANS!" could play with the wider fanbase. Two things can be true at the same time: there aren't enough Axanar fans to do any real damage to the box office of the new film -and- Abrams can be concerned about the negativity from being perceived as going after fans productions.
That's the legend. The reality, according to Herb Solow & Justman's book, is somewhat different. This idea that fans have the power to bend the Hollywood executives who control Star Trek to their will is something that's baked into Star Trek fandom, all because of that one successful letter-writing campaign in 1968 that brought the show back for a third season....
What settlement talks? I thought JJ said the law suit was dropped by CBS?
"A few months back there was a fan film, Axanar, that was getting made and there was this lawsuit that happened between the studio and these fans and [Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin], I'll tell the story because he probably wouldn't, was sort of outraged by this as a long time fan. We started talking about it and realized this was not an appropriate way to deal with the fans,.
"The fans should be celebrating this thing. Fans of Star Trek are part of this world. So he went to the studio and pushed them to stop this lawsuit and now, within the next few weeks, it will be announced this is going away, and that fans would be able to continue working on their project."
"We are pleased to confirm we are in settlement discussions."
I just wonder if this could backfire if peters gets a big ego and goes from thinking he's behind the eight ball to thinking he's in control of settlement talks now that he has the approval of jj.
'So CBS here is what I'm going to do. I won't use the word start trek at all on anything but I'm keeping rights to the axanar brand and can release anything I want under that brand as long as I don't call it Star Trek. You can claim a win that I won;t make anymore Star Trek items. If you don't agree I'm going to jj because he said this lawsuit much go awsy'

Are sure sure that ranaxA doesn't get to do their thing this one last time while everyone else has to toe the line?
Why isn't there a "Shakes my head sadly" button?JJ said the "fans would be able to continue their project" (meaning Axanar). I doubt he said that thinking that Axanar would wind up being constrained to a 5 minute short. Even Prelude was longer than that. So either the pending rules will not put time-limit constraints on or Axanar will be grandfathered in. I suspect the former.
Chuckle. Or it could be that JJ was shooting off at the mouth and no one knows what the end result will be....JJ said the "fans would be able to continue their project" (meaning Axanar). Only said it was going away in a few weeks.
If they wanted to drop it they could have already done that today. That is not normally a long process.

But he is a tool that moves a lot of air and absorbs a great deal of energy with minimal positive results.... so "fan" is a good name for Lord Garth.JJ also said "fans" are being sued. That's not correct. As of now, only Alec Peters is being sued.
Neil
I'll hazard a guess that the license CBS will grant to fan films puts a ban on crowdfunding. That alone will piss off a vast swath of the fan community, both current donors and those who have dreams of making their own films that way. If there are run-time restrictions or content restrictions, Alec won't be seen as the savior of fan films, but the slayer of them.
