JJ's announcement didn't do a damned thing to make me feel better about him or JJtrek in general. I still detest his take on Trek and I still won't be bothering to see the next film.
I, for one, didn't see CBS's suit against AP and Axanar as an attack or bullying fans because there was plenty of sufficient evidence to show AP had crossed way over the line. Additionally CBS's actions were against one specific individual rather than against all fan productions in general. If they wanted to go after everyone then phone calls and letters of C&D could have been issued simultaneously to put the fear of God into everyone. That didn't happen and at no time did CBS express any sentiments of wanting to stop "all this fan film nonsense."
It isn't hard to accept the idea of a corporation throwing its weight around to intimidate or exploit "the little guy." We've seen it before. But that isn't what was happening here. Indeed CBS has been rather easygoing and gracious in allowing fanfilms to proceed as they have when CBS has every right to put a complete stop to it.
The real villain here is a putz who thought he could make a buck piggybacking on someone else's IP and exploiting fan interest. And he was a truly stupid putz because he didn't know enough to not make noise about it. If you're going to rip someone off it's not smart to publicly taunt and disparage them.
Fans were already winning because TPTB live-and-let-live. Now thanks to AP we might not like what we might lose.
