CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Almost all the news sites seem to be in an echo chamber. If this was "planned" by CBS / Paramount, if they "asked" Lin/Abrams to let the cat out the bag, they sure did a poor job of it. Anyone who watches political news know you don't drop a bombshell like this on a Friday night and not be able to get a head or / spin any misstatements.

I know that I don't go to Trekmovie for news any more - they get it late, and they get it wrong.

Trekcore has recently become somewhat more like Trekmovie was, back in the day. When and why did Anthony leave?

I put a question in the Chat thread on Trekmovie. Let's see if I can get an answer. I've wondered myself where Anthony had gone, as I thought Trekmovie was better when he was running things.

It looks as if author Cory Doctorow is closer to getting the Axanar story right.
http://boingboing.net/2016/05/21/jj-abrams-makes-paramount-drop.html
In it he says "It's not clear whether Paramount actually dropped the suit, or whether they're in settlement talks with Axanar."
Thanks Cory, for pointing put he ambiguity!
Over at Memory Alpha on their home page latest news section they're reporting, "JJ Abrams revealed the lawsuit against the fan film Axanar will be dropped."

Seems like folks are just running with the latest buzz instead of vetting information. There's been no official statement from CBS/P yet and I doubt JJ speaks for TPTB.

It is the state of journalism these days. There is no real reporting anymore. Stories just get reprinted over and over with the same factual inaccuracies. I admit, when the story first came out I took it as truth. But the more I discussed it and thought about it, I came to the conclusion that w/o official confirmation from CBS/Paramount, I couldn't believe the truth of it.

I think this may have been JJ's misguided attempt of giving Axanar support (this opinion subject to change when the parties involved make official statements) YMMV, void where prohibited by law, licensed drivers only. you must be 18 or older to play.

... and see a doctor immediately if reading the post takes more than four hours. ;)

Good journalism always begins with editors. Great journalism always begins with good editors. The problem as I see it is Internet "news" sites are sorely in need of editors.

You know, back in the day, if one newspaper picked up a story from another and re-printed it, they'd keep the original by-line intact. These days, the internet blogs and even "real news" sites drop the by-line, making the reader think that site wrote the piece. Very annoying when you're trying to verify the authenticity of a story.

What I hate in this story is literally in one sentence they say that CBS/Paramount has verified the story, and then in the quote that follows it clearly says that settlement talks are beginning.
Also they say that the dropped suit was confirmed by the plaintiffs, but there is no named source. Usually, in real news, they mention spokespeople by name, or they have a disclaimer saying words to the effect that the source gave the info under the condition of anonymity. Neither was done int any of the stories and reprints. :brickwall:

I agree. Yes, JJ said what's being splashed around the net but there are no questions on the part of some sites asking for definitive, reliable, alternative confirmation (Armageddon movie quote) from CBS/P. Copy/paste ad nauseum. IMO, that's misleading.

The real question I have is, that if the suit was dropped (skepticism noted again), why was AP surprised? Why didn't his attorney notify him first? (ok that's 2 questions)

I really honestly don't know. Perhaps JJ misspoke meaning legal settlement discussions are commencing? His Universal Translator malfunctioned? :rommie:

ECHO, echo, echoooooo
It's an entirely different kind of echo. Altogether.

If Mr.s Lin and Abrams were in any way uninformed about Axanar/Alec up to now, the hornets nest they probably stirred up has most likely been giving them a pointed message about it this weekend.

I just love conspiracy theories like the one about the Wizard Glick of Pe'ters and his one desire to become lord and master of all the underworld known as Fan Productions. The Wizard hatches this plot to get the attention of the great and noble Duke of Paramount and when the Duke demanded Glick to submit to the law of the Kingdom of CBS, the Wizard drew upon his armies at what later became known as the Stand at Axanar. There was a mighty battle in the court of media as discontentment and division grew within the kingdom. Then suddenly the Wizard Glick called a truce and met with the Noble Duke with his terms. "Duke", said Glick "Set forth these terms onto the underworld of Fan productions. So that I will become the mightiest Valkyrie the underword has ever known" The Noble Duke only wishing peace among the kingdom of CBS proclaimed, "Be gone oh distasteful squibble, spread your law among the underworld, it means nothing to me." The crowds cheered the Noble Duke's proclamation and the kingdom of CBS continued their mission towards the great Beyond.
