TMP, CGI, and Stephen Collins

This weekend I'm picking up Fritz Lang's Die Nibelungen, a silent masterpiece from 1924, on fancy-schmancy blu-ray disc.

But when you add in fans of 7th Heaven who were seriously outraged, etc, it just makes you wonder how far some people are willing to go when something becomes possible. Get enough money behind something and there's the push.

That doesn't really change the fact that it's an incredibly stupid thing to even consider, much less act upon.

"Hey everyone, I have a great idea! Because we all hate Stephen Collins so much and I hope he burns in the fiery pits of Hell, let's petition Paramount to spend lots of money and time to digitally remove him from all his scenes in a 40 year old movie that no one other than die-hard Star Trek fans even watch. Oh, hold on guys, I think my mom is calling me for dinner, so I gotta log off and get out of the basement now."

Agreed. I'm just saying there are those out there who would do it if they could. Stupidity knows no bounds. And you never know who's going to gain control of a company and start indulging their whims. All it takes is enough bucks.

So we're debating something some hypothetical people might hypothetically want to do someday . . . maybe? :)

Right, because the world has completely forgotten about the existence of any movie made before 1975. Casa-whatta? Citizen who?
Those movies are classics, we're talking about a movie that many trek fans don't even like, a movie that we can't even get the Directors edition of, movie won't be forgotten but it will be filed in the "looks good enough for streaming" folder and left alone.

If we replace Collins, I say we superimpose Burt Reynolds' from Smokey and the Bandit over him.

Gaylord would be more fun:

With that in mind, some have suggested to completely replace Stephen Collins in TMP just as soon as it is possible to do so.
No. Of all the things wrong with TMP, Collins' presence is way down on the list. I'd replace Persis Khambatta before I'd replace him.

If, however, we develop the tech to retroactively improve the screenplay, I'll enthusiastically sign that petition. ;)

She gave a very wooden performance, IMO. There's not much difference between the real Ilia and the V'Ger probe version, even though there should be.

That's problematic because the probe version is suppose to be such an exact replica.

But if everything is exactly the same, why would the personality come out different?
:wtf: ...Because personalities are products of a person's history and environment, not their genetics, and (more importantly from the POV of the movie) if the Ilia-Probe's personality was the same, then V'Ger couldn't control her? Was this plot point not clear to you watching the movie?
