Question about Chip & Signature credit cards

As does Apple Pay. I wish more terminals accepted it down here. Fortunately it seems to be catching on.

Now if only they had digital driver's licenses...wouldn't even need a wallet!

I have encountered places in the US that only take cash. Usually small mom-and-pop restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and the like. So if you generally don't carry cash, you have to go find an ATM somewhere and come back if you really want their product.

There are some places here that only accept debit/credit cards if the amount of the transaction meets a minimum threshold. The lunch place in the public library, for example, is cash-only if your purchase comes to less than $3.00. One of the dollar stores in the mall has a higher threshold, but if your purchases don't meet it, they won't accept cards.

And I assume you have me on ignore given your inability to answer anything I have said.
We don't allow posters to go around flaunting that they have people on their ignore lists because it would be construed as trolling, so the reverse should be true as well, because you're essentially asking them to break the rules by replying in the affirmative.

You could just as easily say "Why haven't you addressed the points I brought up in my earlier posts?" without mentioning being on ignore, rightly or wrongly.

AFAIK, that is a violation of their agreements with banks. Unless there's been a change in banking laws, merchants (in the US, at least) must take cards for ANY amount of purchase, and are not allowed to impose a surcharge when a card is used to pay.

If the situation in Canada is different...then that's very disappointing. :(

^ I don't remember seeing signs about minimum debit transactions around here lately, but back when I did, the "limits" were usually ridiculously low anyway, along the lines of no debit for purchases less than $1, or $2, or maybe even up to $5.

Nowadays, no one seems to care. I feel a bit foolish using debit to buy a $1.75 coffee, but the clerk at Timmie's doesn't even bat an eye.

I don't claim any expertise on the subject of banking agreements. There's no surcharge I know of in the case of the lunch place in the library. If your purchase comes to under $3.00, you pay with cash. They absolutely will not accept debit or credit cards, so if you buy just a pop (for example) and want to use a card, they won't accept the card and impose the minimum amount of $3.00. If your purchase comes to $3.00 or more (mine pretty much always does, as my usual lunch there is soup, fruit juice, and either a cookie or muffin), it's no problem - you can pay with cash, debit, or credit card.

Unfortunately, it looks like my information is out of date. Stupid fucking Dodd-Frank act lets merchants impose minimums now.

Bastards.

So any UK posters send up Android pay now it's available? Works with any contactless terminal - I paid for a few things with it yesterday and worked well.

Never got the big deal about Apple Pay or Android pay, my phone had NFC tech 18-24months before Apple Pay even came out.

If what I've been told is correct, some smaller merchants needed to impose minimums because they would actually lose money from smaller transactions due to the fees they have to pay.

You are correct; that's the reason.

I've encountered coffee stands that add a fifty cent fee to debit charges under five dollars, or something like that.

Hi all! Haven't been here in a while, and since I didn't read every post here, someone may have posted something similar.

We got a Chase Sapphire Preferred for a trip to Europe a couple of years ago, it was C+S, but was 0% FTF (foreign transaction fees). We also had a USAA MasterCard which was a true C+P as back up, and a 3% FTF. We never had to use the MC in three weeks in Europe.

All this reminds me of something that I see every day in the US... gas stations charging ten cents more per gallon for gas purchases when you pay by debit or credit card! :scream:

I actually have never seen that where I've lived (GA, MO, AL).

Android devices have had NFC tech for four years, google just never did anything with it before (not in the sense of android pay).
