Great episode, Dr Seward reminiscing about the meat cleaver was hilarious. Good advice gone bad? I guess we'll see how much help Miss Hardegan will be. Ethan's story got wrapped up fast but that's OK by me. The whole episode was dysfunctional families trying to resolve their problems Penny Dreadful style and it's time Vanessa's got back home.
I hope we'll see Mr Lyle again, though. Going off to Egypt and Imhotep's tomb? Maybe, we'll get some more of the Mummy and those Egyptian vampires in s4? The way Dracula was described and with what we saw in the asylum, he may be a disembodied spirit like Lucifer just inhabiting bodies that he uses? Maybe, Lyle will find something to connect the mythology from s1's Egyptian stuff, s2's Lucifer, and now Dracula? Right now, it seems like 3 separate mythologies with these seasons in a lot of ways.
The more I think about the resolution to Ethan's plot this week, the more I like it. I wrote my previous post this afternoon, just after finishing up the episode. But I've been thinking on it, and I've had some thoughts that really solidify it in my mind. Mostly that the resolution, pretty much everything since they arrived at Talbot Ranch last week, isn't actually about Ethan so much anymore as it is about Malcolm. So much of the resolution hinges on Malcolm looking across that table at dinner and seeing himself, the man he used to be. And then stepping up to save Ethan from that kind of father. Interesting parallels as well to Malcolm shooting Mina back in season 1 to save Vanessa. Ethan's rage, his hate, which Hecate was using to manipulate him towards evil, is focused on his father. Effectively, killing his father is the point of no return for him, from the narrative's standpoint. When Ethan chooses to let his father live, he saves his soul, but didn't remove the potential threat. Malcolm's murder of the elder Talbot is a noble act, in it's way. Saving Ethan from an inevitable round 2.
I also hope the bit with Mr. Lyle is setup for future stories. Not only would it be a shame to lose him, he's delightful, but as you note we have the Egyptian tie to the vampires from the first season. Also, this show could totally use a mummy. Why not throw Imhotep into the mix?
As for the mythology, I too look forward to seeing how they tie in the creatures from season 1. Dracula, being Lucifer's Earthbound brother, seems more likely to have a physical form, but the reveal of his first contact with Vanessa also suggests a more spiritual form? He changes shape, according to our new expert. Glamour? Body swapping? The creatures we've seen before could just be some kind of muscle. Vampire thugs. Mina certainly appeared to be the brains of their operation.
And I was hoping we'd get some more definite answers on Ethan's Lycanthropy. The show has repeatedly hinted that he's been cursed, probably by Kaetenay or someone similar, for his murderous deeds in the Indian Wars. I'm just really curious about the mechanism. Was he bitten? Cursed? Can he pass it to others? The guy who survived the Mariner's Inn didn't show any signs of Lycanthropy, but I don't think we ever saw him on a full moon, either. I spend way more time on Mondays thinking about Penny Dreadful than I probably should, lol.
