CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

To this day, I don't think Peters started off planning anything less than honorable. Despite his inability to take criticism. Despite his past failures. I really do believe that. But I think buying into the cult of personality that is developed not only of your film but of you yourself is what really did Axanar in. But now, he's dug his own grave. And unfortunately, Sean, RMB and others' as well. It's too bad because they're all immensely talented.

RMB is not such a bad guy when it comes down to it - I happily spent last night trading Airport quotes with him #GiveRMBAChance

As the man said, Hindsight is 20-20. and all the other platitudes in this ever-growing and now life-affecting (ruining?) Mess!

WouldaCouldaShoulda
If I knew then...

and all the rest!

For this Thing That We Love.

Sorry for your situation, Titan, and anyone else who is in a similar situation

I don't recall ever reading a statement from Peters to the effect that CBS reached out and asked them to remove "Star Trek" from Axanar - rather, they chose to do it out of an abundance of caution.

I do... It is not on the wayback machine, but I have other ways of finding out

We have posted a story on CBS reportedly pulling the plug on the sequel to the fan-film "Star Trek: Horizon."

Wow! I didn't see that one coming for Horizon, though I probably should have suspected it. Good on Tommy for heeding their advice, and good on CBS for being kind enough to give them a heads up about what could happen. To me that's how things work when people listen to each other.

I kinda expected it. I think any Trek fanfilm project which a) looks "modern" and b) tries to raise a bunch of money are under heavy scrutiny at this point.

Actually, I think it has more to do with the fact Mr. Kraft did do some post production work on Prelude to Axanar. I'll bet C/P's lawyers thought that if/when the Axanar case goes to trial; it wouldn't look good to the Judge or a Jury that a person who worked on Prelude to Axanar was allowed to crowdfund and produce another Star Trek based fan film (and I'm sure such a fact WOULD be brought up by Axanar's lawyers.)

Thus, end result: Mr. Kraft gets a 'friendly' C&D request (but, unlike Mr. Alec Peters) wisely complies.

This makes me wonder if a certain fan film group who uses David Gerrold (listed as a one time script consultant on Axanar - and who himself admitted to giving Mr. Peters some notes on the Axanar script - and who has written 'Pro-Axanar' Facebook posts and posts on Axanar site Blogs - and recently did an interview with Mr. Peters) as a 'show runner' in the past...

might end up with a C&D in the near future because of this association?

Well we know that CBS sent them a letter as Peters said they'd written to him asking for "Star Trek" to be removed from the name of the project - and at the same time reminding him they don't condone the blatant use of the IP in the way he was doing - strangely enough, I have found the blog for that day is missing
Do we have actual evidence of this letter from CBS to Alec Peters asking for 'Star Trek' to be removed from 'Axanar'? They've denied any such thing, and claim it was a pro-active move on Axanar's part. Frankly, they don't have a lot of credibility on this topic, but I still haven't found any evidence of such a letter.

Alec Peters said:
We aren’t recreating TOS and using iconic characters like Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

My memory of it is very much like Dennis'. They said at the time they were removing the "Star Trek" out of deference to CBS and to avoid any potential trouble, but it was very much their decision. They felt that after Prelude the Axanar name was a strong enough brand on its own. There was never any hint that they'd been told to do it by CBS.

I'd also like to add my sympathies for Sean. It's sad that he's been blacklisted for helping out what at the time was another fan production. I certainly hope that once the legal case is over he finds that situation changed as his work is great.

Well...Good News is all over the place! :techman: Because, for just a minute there...

must have been something in my eye

#We are absolutely recreating TOS and using iconic characters like Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

There, fixed that for him!

Good HIjol...always helps!
