Rogue One (2016) [SW Anthology Series)

I was looking around on Amazon the other day and stumbled across the Rogue One prequel novel, Catalyst. Did they announce this with the other books in the next batch of new releases? I don't remember seeing any kind of announcement for it.
Has anybody else heard about other Rogue One merchandise?

It still makes me cringe a bit to see the Disney logo on all the Star Wars stuff.

I saw a report about it a few weeks ago, though the only other thing they mentioned was a Rogue One comic prequel.
Box design now warrants a news release? That's awesome!

I think they did big reveals like this the last couple times they redesigned the packaging.

So far there is no evidence that she is related to any old character. Especially since they are contemporary characters. She might run across them, but not be related to them.

Probably not related to any Prequel Series characters either unless her father was a Clone.

She has a minimal chance of being related to Sequel Series characters, depending on if she lives or not.

Rey has no need to be related, but it would fit the story structure that revolves around the Skywalker family.

One thought I had was about some of the other characters that seem important but aren't really presented much yet. Could they be part of the Church of the Force? That might explain the philosophy and the melee weapons usage.

Yeah I never thought Jyn being related in any way to any established character was even on the table. I've always assumed the new core cast were all new characters.

I'm fairly certain Kathleen Kennedy was very clear back when the anthologies were announced that there was no effort being made to cross any characters over with the main saga.

Not making extra effort to encourage crossovers isn't the same as not allowing it though. Clearly we've got Mon Mothma and probably a few other familiar faces popping up. Having Lor San Tekka or Bail Organa as part of the conspiracy/operation in this film wouldn't take anything away from it, even if it is borderline incestuous. Neither would having it turn out that Jyn popped out Snap Wexley after a dark time in her life when she had a secret affair with Porkins.

Okay maybe not that last part.

^^Shipping Jyn and Porkins? YES!! This has to happen! I'd settle for a post-credits scene that shows the two of them making out just prior to the Death Star battle. And then the novels can expand on it and give their relationship depth and feeling and all that crap.

Using Mon Mothma is like using the AT-ATs (not very flattering I know, but stay with me here) as they're both an established part of the era they're trying to evoke. It'd be weird if she and/or Jimmy Smits weren't there in some capacity, given the plot and setting. Making a main character they just invented the mother of another main character they just invented would I think constitute a conscious effort to cross over.

Also for the record, I don't think Rey *needs* to be related to anyone either. But if she has to be, my preference would be to have her be a descendent of Kenobi and Satine. Mostly because I'd like to see that thread from the show continued but also because it would make Rey a Mandalorian Jedi and possibly a Duchess. ;)
Realistically though, that's an awful lot to explain to moviegoers who never saw TCW, so probably not going to happen.

Well a Kenobi-Satine route does not eliminate the possibility of Rey being a Skywalker, as any child of Kenobi's with Satine would be older than Luke, but not so much older at to make it weird or impossible biologically speaking. (One would have to determine if this child was born from their first encounters back when Obi-wan was a padawan, or during the Clone Wars, which doesn't seem to give her time to have a baby between her appearances.)

I haven't seen his name on cast announcements or lists. Has he said anything publicly about whether or not he'd be willing to come back?

If it were up to me, I'd have the child be the product of that year Satine spent on the run with Obi Wan & Qui Gon. It would seem plausible that she wouldn't tell Kenobi about the child for two reasons; firstly out of respect for his dedication to the Jedi and not wanting to complicate things for him and secondly, given Mandalore's unstable political situation (they just had a civil war) and with Death Watch still lurking in the shadows it would have been safer for her child to be raised in secret, away from court. The irony being that in this situation, it's likely that her Death Watch sister would be the one to ultimately take up guardianship, probably getting him or her even further underground and as far away from Mandalore as possible.

The exact timing is unclear save that it was obviously before the events of TPM, which would mean when Satine died (which I think works out to less than a year prior to RotS) the child would have been at least 12 or 13 years old.

That alone would I think preclude any cross-marriage with the Skywalker line, even if it weren't for the "ick" factor or the mind boggling coincidence. Personally, I don't think Luke ever married or had children, so to me it's academic.

That age bracket would however make it perfectly plausible for Rey to be the granddaughter (or at a push, great-granddaughter) of Obi Wan & Satine.

Like I said though, that's a lot to have to explain to movie audiences so I doubt they'd go with it.

Has there been any suggestion that Jimmy Smits is in it???

None that I'm aware of, but then there was no hint of Genevieve O'Reilly returning as Mon Mothma until the trailer broke, so who knows?
