I think in retrospect she should have been made Federation Ambassador-at-large, or chief diplomatic officer. Someone with authority to mediate and sign treaties on behalf of the Federation. Having a nominated "First Contact Officer" would make a lot of sense for a ship like the Enterprise.

Don't get me wrong - I like that, and can definitely see that. Honestly, there are several job ideas that I think would have been better and the actress more suited for. And I mean, really, they could have combined Guinan and Troi, and had a much more "whole" character for her to play, too.

The difference is that what I was referring to was actually a concept for the character at one point during the show's creation. It almost happened.

Oh I know, I'd heard about that idea before. It's not a bad idea, and I'm sure she wouldn't have had such a Soviet job title, but it would have been difficult to frame a character as sympathetic if they were constantly telling Picard what to do, and making sure he was complying with all the red tape!

Spoilers from a parallel universe: By Season 5, she's fully "part of the family" and is actually working with Picard and crew to hide some of their activities from Federation authorities. (In this universe, the plot of "Conspiracy" was continued over a much longer story arc that blended well with an also longer Admiral Leyton storyline on DS9. And Leyton was on the side of the angels, there: it turned out that the parasites were another part of the Founders' plans, like the Changeling orphan agents. )

I never used to hate Troi, but on my latest rewatch I can see why other people do. Just finished season five and I think the only time she has had something worth mentioning, it's been as a part of someone else's story. Whenever she gets her own material, she is useless or annoying.

I think she has better things to do in seasons six and seven, with Face of the Enemy being my favourite. However, it's mostly things that don't involve being a counselor.

EDIT: To be fair to the character, I do enjoy the little Riker/Troi moments they have throughout the series, which eventually lead up to their reunion in the films.

Nobody is useless who lightens the burdens of others.

I thought Marina Sirtis did the best she could with what she was given, and with the limits of her acting abilities. There were moments both were cringe worthy .

Her appearances on "Voyager" underscored what a weak character Troi was, tho. Compared to Janeway, Torres, & Seven.

Troi was a product of the 80's. I doubt we'll see a counselor in future Trek.

Re: Majel Barrett: I didn't know she had that kind of comic ability or capable of that kind of performance. Too bad it was often so annoying.

I like Troi, and I adore Lwaxana. It was irritating, upon rewatching, that Troi was always made out to be the cosmic cheerleader, when later episodes in later seasons revealed Marina Sirtis was clearly a good actress who could have done so much more if only they would have written more for her (I have this same complaint regarding Gates McFadden/Beverly Crusher). Lwaxana was always a treat for me when she was on the show, and I knew we would get a fun episode.

I've always thought that Marina was a very sexy looking lady especially in the later seasons!
