Wesley Crusher... am I the only one not annoyed by him?

I had absolutely no problem with Wesley Crusher, until his big reveal as The Next Step in Human Evolution. At least this aspect of the character took its sweet time to present itself to an unsuspecting public. The next character to be aggrandised in so ludicrous a fashion was Benjamin Sisko, who was hailed as (I can barely force myself to type it) ... The Messiah.

Is that a TNG episode?

Wesley was occasionally overly cloying but more often decent or even entertaining and he generally was improving.

Wesley was declared, pronounced and acknowledged as "The Next Step in Human Evolution," during the episode Journey's End. The pilot episode Emissary, for DS9 had Kai Opaka inform Benjamin Sisko that he was, in fact, The Emissary - the fulfillment of scripture and Bible Prophesy, within the Bajoran faith.

the original script called for the kai to massage ben's feet rather than touch his ear to read his pah/soul
and for the kai to be a dude?
that would have gone done well in the early 90s

But Sisko's story pales by comparison. I mean, he's not the Messiah, any more than the non-coporeal non-temporal aliens inside the wormhole are Gods. That's a misinterpretation based on observances by ancient Bajorans trying to make sense of things they had no way to understand -- a common theme in Star Trek.

And humanity.

I was going to post the other day. I'm on season five on my rewatch, and I was going to pipe up when I watched The Game, which was typical of poor Wesley episodes from season one. He was the only one who could see that the game was addictive as the silly adults were all to naive to think there was something suspicious. He also rebooted Data and saved the day. Meh.

However I plodded on, and instead what made me want to post was seeing The First Duty just. What a belter of an episode! They made him seem like a real person with flaws in this one, and I forgot how much I loved it. Easily his best episode, but also one of the best that year.

I think pairing him off with Picard usually gave him great scenes.

Season 2+ Wes is fine, I think once he was out of the ridiculous sweaters he was fine.

Jake "annoyed" me more, mostly because it seemed he was written... anachronisticly. He was a whiny, petulant 20th century teenager who struggled with his math homework. This in an advanced society where, according to an episode of TNG, "middle school" aged kids are taught Calculus. (Maybe extreme, but with an advanced, year-round scholl system focused on educating with longer school days and advanced teaching techniques not impossible.)

I swear there's an episodd of DS9 where Jake is, like, failing Algebra or something when he's 14.

More "realistically" written? For a 20th/21st century teen sure, not so much for a 24th century one.

You're not alone.

Except for a few specific moments in episodes ( like in "The Naked Now"), Wesley Crusher was a-OK.

Wesley was pretty human. I think Wil Wheaton gave a pretty good performance throughout. Even his " We're Starfleet- we don't lie" remark rang true of a naive, idealistic young kid.

I never got the Wesley hate. I think sci-fi fans have a tendency to be overly cruel and critical (yet when they meet those actors at conventions they fawn)

I'll add that Jake Sisko was one of the better DS9 characters. His relationship with his dad was one of the best relationships on the show.

In retrospect, Wesley was a better character than Troi, LaForge, and Dr.Crusher to me.

I also was never annoyed by Wesley. I like him. He is a smart boy on the Enterprise who knows his stuff to be an engineer or helmsman (think of Picard saying: "Thank you, Conn."). I also never got the hate. There is a similar thing in another science fiction series: Doctor Who (British). There is this character named Adric. He joined the Fourth Doctor was played by Tom Baker (Adric died with the Fifth Doctor; Peter Davison). He, like Wesley, is very intelligent. I don't understand the hate towards him either. Why is Wesley so hated??????

I've never been entirely sure. Although I think ironically he might have been less annoying if we saw more of the "rookie" or "inexperienced" supporting crew members like Gomez, Lefler, Barclay, even the more confident but junior officers like Ogawa, Taurik (who managed to annoy me more in one episode than Wes managed in 3.5 seasons) and teams of enlisted personnel, rather than the narrative focusing almost entirely around the senior officers, his flaws would be less obvious by comparision (IMO the SeaQuest franchise's Lucas Lucas Wolenczak benefited from this compared to Wesley)?

I really enjoyed those episodes, especially since I was around his age when they aired. I always felt like I was either enjoying the story or learning/being reminded of a good lesson without being "talked down to" - if that makes any sense. I certainly do not dislike his character.

It reminds me of the hate that Jar Jar Binks and Anakin Skywalker got with the Star Wars Prequels. Yes, they are a little naive and annoying, but their characters are suppose to represent and entertain kids (especially since it is Star Wars.)

You make a really good point. When fans bring up Neelix (since he is typically referred to as the "Jar Jar of Trek"), I tend to stand up for the character, even his message flaw about being SUPER CREEPY jealous of Kes. For me, I saw it as a Trek learning lesson, especially to a younger viewer that jealousy at that level isn't a good thing and isn't healthy to a relationship. I feel like especially in Trek, even the underdeveloped characters certainly still serve purposes that make them a useful character to the story lines.

I take it nobody has covered Wesley Crusher's disillusion of Starfleet once the Maquis started to come into focus on Season 8. Wesley Crusher being annoying on Season 1 notwithstanding, that must sting seeing Wesley Crusher losing all admiration towards Starfleet when he started seeing the plight of the Maquis; settlers being forced to abandon their homes "cebause" it was territory handed back over to the Cardassians. I mean, does anybody else have anything to add to that?

He is extremely irritating when he gushes over Picard which he does several times throughout the run. That's what pushes him deep into the irritating zone. There's nothing then to commend him that pulls him out of the irritating zone. He's an indifferent character otherwise. The boy genius Mozart shtick is fine but having a boy-wonder as part of the ensemble is fairly pedestrian really. It's almost as old hat as having a Neelix-esdque court jester on the squad.

His fair episodes are The First Duty and Journey's End. But the fact his 'genius' never really goes anywhere coherently confirms him as a very underwhelming character. Wheaton's range as an actor seems limited enough; so it's hard to see what else could be done with him. .

Am I missing an inside joke here? I don't know what your reference to "season 8" means - but I do love the topic of the Maquis and how it tested even the most loyal people of Starfleet in the characters we were following in TNG, DS9 and VOY to rethink things. As for "Season 8", I don't know what that means, unless I need to pull out that Warped book I was given for my birthday :)

Typo. It's supposed to be Season 7. Can't really tell which numeric key am I striking when half the keyboard is under the rim of the desk...
