It's not enough. According to this apparently

Reports from last year said Disney and Marvel were reportedly disappointed with the box office totals from this film since they did not live up to the first one

It's going to get ridiculous. They can't just outperform every previous movie.

It's unrealistic expectations

What happens if "Civil War" is the first movie to make 2 billion? And the "Avengers Infinity War part 1" makes 1.9 billion? Will be deemed a failure?

It's impossible to keep getting a higher number. They're just setting themselves up for failure

Maybe they'll scale back after "Infinity War" and not expect a billion for all their movies.

Yeah it may be ridiculous that this is the expectation now, but I think we saw from the huge opening weekend that the interest in BvS was definitely there, and if the movie had been a lot better it probably could have easily shot up over a billion. Which probably only makes this even more frustrating for the studio.

I mean we're talking about an epic matchup between Batman and Superman, featuring the first appearance of Wonder Woman. There's just no WAY the numbers for something like that should be dropping off so quickly.

Looks like Ang Lee's Hulk will finally be able to rest, as it'll no longer be the gold standard for steep second-weekend superhero movie drop-off.

If The Dark Knight can make over a billion dollars in 2008, then surely a film which pits Batman against Superman almost a decade later should be making almost the same to constitute a financial success?
It just goes to show that quality and good WOM count for something. You can't throw any old cluttered, noisy, half-baked spectacle on the big screen and expect massive success these days.

I can see Superman coming back from the dead but what about Clark Kent? Since they buried him I guess there's no coming back for him unless people know he's Superman?
Good question...that hadn't occurred to me. It seems a little early in the life of this version of the character to drop that iconic angle of the mythos.

Snyder's dropped virtually everything else about Superman, his hope and optimism, his humanity, his morality, his inspirational presence, his caring nature, his need to save as many people as he can and not put anyone at risk or in danger, him having inspiration and hope from his human parents (Maybe next time let the bus fill of kids drown, Clark), his need to be part of something bigger being something that always drove him into becoming the hero we all need and deserve (Eh. after high school I think I'll wander around the world until I'm in my mid-30s), letting little stand in his way of always being his very best (If Lois dies, I'm totally taking over the world!) so I don't see how dropping the Clark Kent thing would be any different.

I'm going with a 90% chance of the "reborn" Superman having some kind of new powers beyond those he ever really had in the comics aside from silly Silver Age stuff induced by a plot contrivance or a new color of kryptonite (Red-K: It does whatever silly thing we need it to do; just this once!) I'm guessing some kind of psionic or telekentic powers, maybe something like the various "other" versions of Superman we got after "The Death of Superman" in comics, maybe some Superboy-style powers.

I mean, how much fun will Superman be when he's even more unlike Superman than he already is?!

Well, when you put it that way.... :p

Electro-Supes!

By that reasoning MCU would never have existed...

Even if BvS underperforms there's no going back.
Will WB be sad that they didn't make more money. Likely.
Will they scrap their future plans because of it. Highly unlikely.

The next two films are Suicide Squad which has generated a lot of buzz even among people who don't watch comic book movies , and Wonder Woman who was a highlight of BvS even for a large number of people who hated the movie. Both have a good starting position regardless of BvS backlash.

I don't see them backing out of Justice League neither, it starts shooting in the next few weeks and is reportedly lighter in tone. Risking another underperforming movie is still financially better than delaying their entire slate.
I doubt what's happened with BVS will have much of an effect on the movies already in production, but I could see then reevaluating their plans for future movies. If any more of the DCEU movies get this kind of reaction, I doubt we'll ever see anything beyond Cyborg, if we even make it past JL Part 2.

If they are going to project earning a billion or two less than Avengers 1, then they should halve or 1/4 their budget, to keep the profits commensurate and proportional to invested capital.

I think The Flash and Aquaman will still happen (particularly the latter since they've already hired James Wan to direct and cast Amber Heard as Mera), but I can see DC's post-2018 slate (sans Justice League Part Two) getting reshuffled and/or replaced almost completely to make room for a solo Affleck Batman movie ASAP.

I can't honestly believe we're at a point where "$800 million would be a huge disappointment." I mean what the hell, that's some kind of absolute insanity.
It happens with Marvel too. I mean Avengers 2: Age of Ultron made $1.4 Billion; yet you still have some folks decrying what a 'failure' that film was compared to the First film: Marvel's The Avengers that made $1.5 Billion (and most sequels make WAY less than the original; but even taking into account slight inflation - Avengers 2: Age of Ultron performed VERY well at the box office - yet again to many it was 'a failure' for various reasons. (Not to me - I enjoyed the film and still do today as I watch it on the various 'pay' cable channels (Starz, etc.)

It's why I'm starting to think ignoring nerds on the Internet as whitnoise is a good idea, because half of their yammering a are about how pretty much every movie is doomed.

Well I think the terrible Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean sequels prove that audiences have no problem with cluttered, noisy, half-baked spectacles. It's just big summer movies that are dull and plodding and almost entirely devoid of humor that I think they really have a problem with, and unfortunately those are all things that BvS suffers from.

I saw on Facebook that they're reshooting Suicide Squad to add jokes to avoid a repeat of the same complaints from last month.

I think it's more because the trailer with the comedy in it and Queen song was much better received than others. If they think the only thing lacking in BvS were jokes, then they're in even more trouble.

Same goes for Clark's supporting cast / work colleagues. Jimmy for instance...

Glad I've not seen the trailer then.

More fresh gags when I see the movie...

A solid analysis, if you could look past the annoying neckbeard with a shitty nineties hairdo.

If Ben Afflek has written a... Fuck.

Ben could have totally talked Robin Williams into being the Riddler, if Robin was still with us.

(I'm having a Giggle fit)

Fully grown, old man Robin Williams as Robin the Boy Wonder.
