CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

I'm just going to throw this out there--and no one has to agree with me on this--but one-sentence back-and-forths are confusing as heck to me. It's impossible for me to follow the flow of the conversation and what people's positions are.

I would like to move for the expansion of sentences into paragraphs. :D All in favor?

From Scotty's line about thinking they were explorers first, to Kirk's speech at the end, I think the movie was almost ham-fisted in that message. I think Roddenberry would've enjoyed seeing Marcus go down and the non-militaristic tone of the story. It certainly sells what Trek is better than a documentary on the glories of Captain Garth as a soldier. That's why I've never understood those claiming "Prelude" captured the essence of Trek better than anything else has recently.

Don't worry. You're not alone wondering what planet the Axanerds are on, or what Comic-Con hippie weed they're high on thinking that Prelude somehow captures the essence of what Star Trek is supposed to be.

Axanar Proper, in my opinion, would've played like a "Wrath of Khan" edit that cut out Genesis, David, Kirk's and Khan's bitter animosity, and Kirk's and Spock's friendship.

Or Kirk's questioning of himself. Which was a big part of the movie.

I don't have a Trek script to my credit, fan-film or otherwise (NO IP VIOLATIONS HERE, GOOD FOLKS AT CBS/P :)). But to me, the flaw in "Prelude" was typical of a lot of amateurish writing (speaking as one who delved seriously into writing short stories about thirty years ago until I realized everyone else around me was better at it than I was). "Prelude" is not technically bad, but the good stuff takes pains to build up characters and lets them drive the stories. To be blunt, every character in "Prelude" seemed generic to me. All they needed to be and nothing else. Barely 2D. Could I write better? I don't know. Could I write worse? Hell yeah. But still, there wasn't much "there" there on the characters. And in my opinion, good Trek is driven by the characters. So, yeah, Axanar comes off as the final square-off between Kirk and Khan in the nebula, with none of the gravitas that made it so compelling. (But again, I'm being critical of something I'm not sure I could do any better.)

Yeah, this is a nice supplement to Franklin's point. We're told Ramirez gave the greatest speech of all time (then we see the speech and... ehhhh). We're told Garth is a master battle tactician with almost preternatural insight (then we see the Ares casually drift in front of a Klingon ship and shoot at it... ehh). We're told his battle plan is the most epic in military history (then we find out he's going to go to Axanar and ambush them... ehh).

It reminds me of the film "Stranger Than Fiction." I couldn't accept the premise that Emma Thompson was a legendary writer because none of the prose from her fictional books was any good.

You're a fan of Star Trek. No one (hopefully) will dispute that.

But that's not the same thing as being 'well-versed.' It's like I'm a general fan of Batman because I have seen the movies/the shows and read a fair few of his comics. But I really don't read them consistently or enough to be 'well-versed' in Batman. There's too many gaps in my knowledge.

It's not really important unless the conversation relies on having a fair amount of background info, such as 'What's the essence of the Batman franchise?' Even then I could still say something like 'Based on what I know, this is what I think....', it's just I'd have to admit it's not an extraordinarily well-informed opinion.

(Star Trek fan since 1984, and have seen every movie, and every episode of every series)

Of course, big fans of Star Trek may not know those answers. I'm sure someone could easily stump me in other ways. Being well versed is just a nice little side effect of being a long-time fan, it doesn't take away from a newer fan's passion or zeal.

Just wondering, can the Judge order Axanar Productions to hand its assets over to CBS as compensation for the IP violations? If so, could Peters get round it by "selling" the costumes, Bridge set and so forth to Propworx so the company has no assets at all?
 
He'd have to do it BEFORE the judge orders the asset forfeiture; otherwise he'll be in contempt of court.

But why are we giving out such ideas openly??

Because I didn't know if he could do this or if, under US law, there could be no movement of assets whilst a case is underway... I am certain Miss Jespah will know
