CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Proxy bidding is using a program to bid for you in set increments if you are outbid, as far as I know. It doesn't imply that you weren't genuinely trying to win the lot.
Shill bidding is bidding on your own auctions to increase the price the eventual winner pays and generate the appearance of interest.
Alec has claimed that he bid on every item in a past auction (which included consigned items), because 'he wanted the items himself.'

That's as close to fraud as you can get - he can claim he legitimately wanted everything, but chose not to pay an elevated price, but for goodness' sake that's a very, very fine line.

I don't think this was linked to in this thread, but everything else has been, so maybe I just missed it. Here is an example of Alec Peters in action, going back to 2009.

I think a definite pattern is emerging regarding Alec Peters business practices/ventures.
  • AP takes advantage of people screwing them out of their money.
  • People begin questioning what is going on.
  • AP uses disingenuous damage control doubletalk.
  • People ask even more questions.
  • AP starts character assassinating anyone asking what's going on.
  • People start comparing notes realizing they've been had.
  • AP moves on to his next money fleecing scheme.
  • Rinse and repeat.
What a first class douchecanoe.

Even if he legitimately did, it's hardly good business practice when acting in a professional capacity to sell those items. It opens you up to exactly the sort of insinuation we've all made. There's a reason why employees are normally exempt from entering a contest, for example. The mere appearance of impropriety if they were to win.

I know he has said this many times, but I take it it's a matter of public record that he DID graduate?

Dunno.

The only way to confirm that somebody earned a degree from the University of North Carolina is to order a verification from the National Student Clearinghouse. Does anybody feel like ponying up the $12.50 fee for this cause?

The North Carolina State Bar does actually list an Alec Peters Jr. with currently Inactive status. Could that be him?

Anyway, anybody who has ever had enough dealings with lawyers knows they don't all hold the same standards.

He's never admitted to shill bidding that I am aware of, since that would be fraud. But he has openly admitted to proxy bidding, which reputable companies like Christies don't allow. Since he's fond of comparing Propworx to Christie's, I find this amusing.

Well, he's also fond of saying Axanar Productions does nothing different than any other Star Trek fan film group (in fact he's said they "violate Star Trek copyright/IP less than any other group..."); so yeah, I wouldn't believe a word that passes his lips regarding comparisons to actual reputable or 'unwritten rule' abiding groups.

Marketworx aka Auctionworks - started in 1999, Alec resigned in 2005, reportedly raised $16,000,000 in venture capital.

Over and over I have read AP say he founded this and then sold it for 16 million. Was it actually a sale, or was that number really just investment, without any further info about what outcome was achieved with that money? are you sure that was only investment money?

and usually, when one says they built an xx million business, if thats what he meant, they are referring to the revenue or the market value, not the raw dollar investments.

What's the difference between proxy and shill? I've been in the room and it looks like shill to me.
If he bid on a lot of items and lost most of them, I might start suspecting that was shill. At the BSG live auctions he was bidding on certain items and winning a fair amount of the time. And we knew these were pieces he wanted for his personal collection. He was as big a fan as the rest of us. But I kept thinking, why would I want to bid against him? He automatically had a 20% advantage over me, plus the shipping fees. I was gobsmacked that he bid in his own auctions. Anyone who dared question it was belittled and eventually slinked away. I thought it was very unprofessional.

To be fair, I haven't seen him relist items he won, which would set off shilling alarm bells. Doesn't mean he didn't do something that looked fishy in other auctions. I mainly followed the BSG and some Star Trek auctions.

What's so sad about all this is Alec has a knack for doing fun, exciting projects for fans. Then the shifty, angry, controlling cray cray comes out. Caveat Emptor.

I have heard both "sold for" and "raised" $16 million. He did say he wished he got all of it. How much he ended up with, who knows. But he appears to be out of money. He said he was going to self fund the first $50,000 of Axanar's costs, but we never heard about that again after he blew the doors off his first fundraiser.

Awesome, I hope you did enjoy yourself. I didn't know about the Con until it was over and I've been too busy anyway. I've been hoping someone would ask AP hard questions he'd rather not answer at one of the Cons he attends.

Shatner got to answer what was the combination to the safe. Alec will get to answer whether the Klingons really could have won. Legacies.
