As I'm from Europe, I was never fond of Baseball like Sisko, Jake and Kasidy (or Mr. Laser Beam for that matter).

Nonetheless, this episode is one of my favorites. It shows team spirit. Everybody supports each other. So it doesn't really matter to me if it's Baseball or American Football or Velocity or Soccer or something else.

Even Rom and Odo had their scenes. Captain Solok's face during the episode was a sight to behold.
This team spirit is why DS9 is so strong.

Granted, they had to offer something different. In TNG it was the regular Poker evening......
Thoughts?
 
Strangely enough, this was on SyFy earlier this evening.

A pure comedy episode. Light relief from all that had happened in previous episodes, and from all that was to come. Nowhere near as good as Our Man Bashir or Badda-Bing Badda-Bang, but watchable as an ensemble piece.
 
Before somebody comes along to make a snide, dismissive comment about this episode, I would like to say that I also appreciated the depiction of teamwork, and found the Vulcan arrogance to be quite apropos as it has been a trait of theirs ever since TOS.

I do appreciate the occasional light-hearted episode.

Fun fact: Max Grodenchik (Rom) is a baseball player IRL. He even considered going pro before he became an actor.

He's so good at the game, in fact, that he had to go out of his way to be a BAD player during the actual episode.

Also, Cirroc Lofton (Jake) is the nephew of an actual player, Kenny Lofton. That's why Cirroc wore an Atlanta Braves cap during rehearsals (Kenny was playing for the Braves at the time).
 
An episode to be taken as it is: light relief. Overall, a moderately good episode with genuinely funny moments. Scotch-infused gum and "Death to the opposition" are just some of the funny gags throughout the episode. The big complaint I have is that the music doesn't really fit the mood.
 
I like this episode. I know it's generally not very well though of though.
I really like how the Vulcans have put all this effort in to learning the game, just to be jerks.
I like to imagine them fussing about designing the logo and arguing about the name and stuff.
 
The only problem I have is that Solok is such a jackass. Which is atypical, even for a Vulcan. Although it can probably be attributed to his personal animosity towards Sisko.
 
I don't find it particularly funny. I don't mind Solok being a jerk but he was a jerk in a very tropey way that makes no sense. An intellectual species choosing a physical contest to prove racial superiority? A logical species even caring about racial superiority? Then even when he won, acting annoyed that the opponents aren't bummed about it?

Solok was basically characterized as a sitcom style bully character. The guy who's a jerk for the sake of being a jerk and acts like a brat when he inevitably loses. They're annoying and cheesy in sitcoms and even worse in scifi.

Those kinds of characters belong in Full House, not DS9.

Throughout the episode, Max plays as a left hander: he throws with his left, catches with his right, stands at home plate with his right side forward and his left hand on top of his right. Hand dominance is arguably more important in baseball than in other sports, affecting how one pitches, how one is pitched to, how one runs, where one tries to his, one positions one plays, etc. Switching from right handed to left handed allowed Max to look far less skilled than he really is.

Oh, believe me, baseball is FULL of entertaining ejections. There've been some managers who get CHEERED after being ejected because they're so fun to watch when they go nuts. Just google some names like Lou Piniella, Earl Weaver and Billy Martin. :lol:

That said, the most hilarious ejection in the history of baseball actually happened in the minor leagues:

Come to think of it..... When I visited my cousins in California in 1995 they gave my some Baseball cards they have collected..... Never could appreciate it.
