Best of Both Worlds Nitpick Special

Lieutenant Commander

bear with me here
picture the scene
riker and co have beamed down to jouret 4 new providence colony
with plants and styrofoam rocks behind them riker calls up to space Irish
to confirm accuracy of the beam down site
(must think obrien is on the sauce)
after telling him he should be in the centre of town
we look out on to a big ass crater
which our heroes are standing on the edge of.

so if theyre in the centre of town and the crater is ahead of them
why isnt the rest of the town behind them?

didnt q who have an borg attacked/assimilated planet missing all towns and cities leaving behind craters
not just half a town?

As for the obligatory rationalization, Trek colonies are the size of weekly episode budgets. That crater was way bigger. Also, Trek colonies consist of mud huts with replicators embedded in the walls if the luddite secessionists haven't declared those devil's tools. And Jouret IV was one of the outermost colonies in the UFP, thus probably a runt as colonies go.

So what did these technophile Borg scoop up? Not the mud huts, which were simply leveled in the attack, but the subspace antenna or tibidibidium-mining forcefield drill or spaceport just outside the mud hut town...

Note also how the close edge of the crater reveals what looks like concrete and blacktop with embedded pipes. The undamaged ends of these pipes lead from the pit to the region of green grass and grey rocks behind the backs of the heroes. So there must be something there, even though the camera doesn't turn in that direction. "Half the town" sounds acceptable for the raison d'être of those pipes!

Maybe they were at the center of town, the hole in the ground just was deeper right next to them, they were beamed at the center, but there wasn't much left around them, they were standing in a hole too, not just as deep as the one they saw.

The colonists built their colony with nice discrete areas. The landing party was in the middle of the colony, with the darling little shops and trendy bistros, behind them was the residential zone, with homes, schools and lovely parks.

And ahead of them (where the crater was) was the technological area, with the medical center, research facilities and heavy manufacturing.

The only area the Borg were interested in.

The Center of Town is not literally the CENTER OF TOWN. Rather, it's the name of the local watering hole and fun zone. Where you wanna go Friday night? How about the Center of Town?

Since they'd lost contact with the colony, why not beam down to where all the latest gossip can be found, and therefore the answer? God bless O'Brien for knowing what the away team needs every time!

I always pictured something more like this:

borg_steamshovel_at_earth.jpg

Man, damn borg and their over the top tractor beam technology. Or in this case, combine harvester technology. West Country borg. That's what was needed. Then Picard could all Yorkshire and Troi could destroy it with levels of cockney sarcasm unseen that side of the Bricklayers Arms.

I believe we have witnessed the Very First Use, Ever, of a Venn Diagram, in the BBS Threads.

Diagrams Will Be Drawn.

"We are the Borg. Your planet will be demolished to make way for a new transwarp bypass. Surprise is irrelevant. The demolition orders have been on display at the planning office in the Delta Quadrant for fifty years. Making a fuss is futile."

I believe we have witnessed the Very First Use, Ever, of a Venn Diagram, in the BBS Threads.

I find that... very hard to believe, that a Venn diagram has never been used here before. Let's do some research...

Huh. Well, I guess diagrams don't lie.

Quiet, you.

How about this one: in Part 2 we see the Borg ship flying by Saturn at sublight, and Wesley reports that the Borg will reach Earth in 27 minutes at their current speed.

But Saturn is 746 million miles away from Earth. Even at the speed of light (Warp 1) it would take 66.8 minutes to get to Earth from there.
