Funny how some of us want completely opposite things out of the new show. I am excited for any kind of Star Trek to be finally arriving though!

Ideally, I want a series with no war as a backdrop and no over-arching main story, just a series of fantastic stand-alones of exploration, anthropology, discovery, etc. Or there could be stories that span several episodes, where the crew is investigating/intervening in some new alien culture.

As far as the timeline is concerned, I would prefer the main one, but it barely matters. I just hope it won't be action packed about some war that drags on for seasons.

Do we know if it's going to be on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime?
As it is being used as the flagship show for CBS All Access, it will likely be exclusive to that platform, the same way Orange is the New Black and House of Cards are exclusive to Netflix, and Transparent is exclusive to Amazon.

Makes sense, thanks. I guess I'll have to subscribe to it...

Is it safe to say that this is not going to be a continuation of the Enterprise, with the same crew? Personally, I'd prefer that by a huge margin over anything from the abramsverse.

CBS will air the premier episode in January 2017. I think we won't see the CBS All Access start the series until after Feb.24, 2017.
Here is why:
CBS is still on a ratings roll. For the week ending Feb. 21, CBS aired all of the top 11 broadcast shows in total viewers, marking the second consecutive week that the network claimed the 10 most-watched broadcast programs.
CBS won the week in viewers, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 for the third week in a row, which the network hasn't done in almost two years.
It's unlikely that CBS's top 10 streak will make it to a third week, however, because The Voice returns Monday on NBC.

The 2017 Superbowl is February 5, 2017. I'm sure they will try to have the same as 2015 and 2016 for ratings so look for the date The Voice returns in 2017 on NBC and I think we'll see CBS All Access start that week with the Trek series.

I think all of the complaints about this series being exclusive to CBS All-Access have been forgetting this aspect.

Yes, it sucks that you have to pay a whole $5.99 for a month of new Star Trek, but what I'm really disappointed with is that that it may not even reach and create a new generation of fans.

I love reading posts with people talking about growing up watching TOS or TNG every week and how much of an impact it made on their childhood, they just turned on the TV one day and came across it, forever changing their lives, but with a completely unknown streaming service like All-Access carrying this show, who the hell is going to find it other than teenagers and young adults who are reading up on this news?

Unless this series is only going first-run on streaming and will actually get syndicated later on, a large part of the TOS and TNG audience will be missing, the kids, and it will hurt the future of the franchise.

Hmm, I don't know if that'll be a problem.

Most people I know my age and under, don't even watch cable anymore and stream everything. I think with just a few ads online and billboards, people will find it. :)

Personally, I haven't had a tv in around 5 years, I've been using a projector instead. I stream all my entertainment through Netflix, Hulu, Amazon. My only concern is whether it's going to be accessible as an app via my console (PS4)

I don't think many people watch actual television anymore. I don't understand people that complain about paying $6/month for StarTrek either. You'd have to be literally starving for that kind of money to be making an impact on your budget.

Just went on their site and it looks like it's only compatible with the following

I have chromecast, but it slows everything down. So to watch StarTrek I'd have to install CBS app on my phone (android) then sync it with chromecast to watch it on the big screen. That is pretty annoying.

edit

Upon further investigation, I've learned that if I want to watch it through my console, I need to pay $40 a month for something called PlayStation Vue. Now that's a different story, it is pretty pricey.

I've got the All Access App on my Roku, and it works really well, at lease the free preview did. I'll probably get my subscription set up this fall, once it gets closer.

As a long-time fan, I'm getting cautiously optimistic about the new show. Very mixed about it being with All Access, but since it's the cornerstone of that, I think the show will be protected from threat of weekly ratings causing a cancellation.

I very much hope it's in the Prime Universe. Would like to see Nicholas Meyer write and direct the premiere "movie" episode. Way back in January 1993, DS9 had its premiere movie. They filmed that one from late August to Sept. of 1992. That was really pushing it to get the FX done, but we'll probably be looking at a similar schedule this time around. I imagine they'll be working flat-out to get the concept of the show down soon. They probably need to start building the sets in July.

Why does chromecast slow everything down? Are you doing the tab streaming off a computer? That's not really how chromecast is meant to be used. It's a hack for when they launched to get around lack of app support. Install the CBS app on your phone and use that to cast to your TV. It's simple and you get to use your phone as a remote rather than a poorly designed TV app

No, I chromecast from my phone, but there's always more delay than if I do it directly through ps4, not sure why. Like youtube would start 2 seconds later on the big screen than it did on my phone. Perhaps it's because I don't have tv and use a projector.

Amen to that. Do you KNOW what that's called? STAR TREK. Something I so want to see again.

Based on the options in this poll, I went for a complete reboot - but by that, I mean an actual totally new Star Trek. Not just rebooting Kirk and Spock and the Enterprise again. Which is still not necessarily what I would want to see most, but it is the only option on this list that sounds interesting. Trying to build a TNG reboot on the framework established by light, action movies seems like a recipe for total failure (or total lack of any real connection to those movies, in which case, what's the point?) and just pushing the Federation reset button by moving 100 years into the future again feels lame and derivative.

At the end of the day, though, I don't really care that much what timeline it's in - prime, abrams or all-new timeline - I'm much more concerned with what kind of show it is.

I'd much prefer an all-new (or at least mostly new) cast, a new ship/location, and above all a new style of story telling. More serialization (not necessarily maximum serialization - there's nothing wrong with having stand alone episodes and larger arcs mixed in together; and I actually liked ENT's later use of 2/3 episode arcs, as well), more flexibility in terms of who we get to see and when (less myopic concentration on the bridge crew, more willingness to embrace recurring characters and even let some characters rotate in or out, maybe even spread the show out over multiple ships/locations), and a strong balance between idea based and character based storylines (don't focus everything on villains, don't reset characters after episodes that should hugely impact them, etc).

There's not going to be any connection to the films, largely because the franchises are functionally split - CBS is actually required to release the TV series six months after Star Trek Beyond because of that sense of competition.

Anyway, I think the new Star Trek needs to be something someone who has never watched Star Trek before can sit down and enjoy. That means its relationship to Star Trek canon, whatever it is - a reboot or set in an existing universe - is at a functional back seat to it establishing its own identity. I'd prefer it to be a new cast of characters because it allows Star Trek's progressive ideals to be better suited to today (it says something that J.J. Abrams got a more mixed cast for his Star Wars continuation than his Star Trek reboot).
