CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

I'm trying to build the perfect summary post that I can copy/paste whenever this subject comes up on the various sites I read. My goal is to describe the situation clearly and simply, so someone who has no idea what is going on will understand the meat of the situation. Here is what I have thus far, and please share any feedback:
Feel free to borrow or add to our FAQ at AxaMonitor!

is it certain that they aren't just running everyone as 1099 independent contractors? Or paying them out of a cigar box?
We know *some* people were paid as independent contractors. We know Axanar used a payroll service to pay some *others*. We know a lot was spent on salaries without names attached to them. We don't know how many were employees and how many were contractors. That's all the transparency I could find in the Annual Report.

On a related note, I don't recall allocations in their budget for any tax issues. Did they explain how they are going to cover all that? Perhaps I missed it.

And don't forget that the this law suit was because, Paramount was afraid that Beyond could not compete with Axanar (shakes head in disbelief) what planet are they from?

Really, Alec Peters, with his Donors Store full of perks and his endless promises of "the best Star Trek film EVAR!11!" effectively gave his loyal acolytes the perfect real-world bread and circuses.

That's my favorite part. Reading the 1701 summary of the screenplay, and then hearing Alec and co. shamelessly call it "the best Star Trek script ever," is amazing.

As I've said upthread, it's almost statistically impossible for novice screenwriters (Burmett aside) to write a great script. Beginners simply don't understand the form well enough to know what makes a good script, even reading one.

Yep.

This.

Yeah?...but I have got the perfect script! I really do! It is all about this "Fan Film", see, and about a couple of Big Corporations that are evilly against it and stuff...and there's these people that are trying to get it made with donations from their friends and family, and getting cast to work for free. But the Big Bad Corporation, I'm gonna call the bad guys Paramountians...or maybe Anaxnanarians...yeah, but, anyway, the bad guys are like bugging the filmmakers at every turn, with lawyers and judges and not letting them have coffee or anything...this script is IT!...:bolian:

In all fairness, the script under review was an earlier draft and not the "locked" script Burnett praised.

A theoretical question for posters: What will you do if Paramount/CBS settles the lawsuit, and gave support towards the production of Axanar? Either by just allowing the project to continue, or actually getting involved with the project, and releasing it as a sanctioned project.

I know this is a largely anti Axanar thread, and I myself have mixed feelings about it. I am a supporter of many fan projects though, and still want to see this project, and others continue to be made. Without delving into the "fan film politics" and issues with members of the team. How would you feel if Paramount changes their tune? Also how would you feel if Paramount, decided to start going after all fan productions.

And another very important question if you have the time and logic.... Who would win in a footrace; A Klingon or a Vulcan???:vulcan::klingon::beer:

The extent to which they use a payroll service, they pay everything together in one lump sum to the payroll company, wages, taxes and percent fee for the service. The payroll service is the actual "employer of record." 1099s they don't pay taxes since they're independent contractors who are responsible for their own taxes. Unless they should've been hired as employees instead, in which case Axanar owes back taxes.

I wouldn't do anything but be bemused.

It's not an anti-axanar thread. It's just a thread discussing the truth of what is really going on.

The Ferengi fixing the race is the only one who can tell you who will win.
