"The surreal wormwhole adventure with Sisko, with all of those mixed-up flashbacks, is for me both one of the strengths and weaknesses of this movie. In a few places to me it seems almost 2001-like—and I mean that as a compliment! But maybe it wears its heart a bit too much on its sleeve before we've gotten to know the character? Not sure."

I 100% agree with this statement about being a little too emotional for the first episode. The first time I watched the series I couldn't get into the first couple episodes because I wasn't emotionally invested in the characters yet. Good observation!

A little of that first scene with Garak:

If you are like myself and watch the episodes on Netflix, has anyone else noticed whoever made the "summaries" for the episodes clearly only watched the first couple minutes of each episode and then made the summaries from that? I mean almost none of them tell you what the episode is really about! It annoys me

The third episode of the first season, "A Man Alone," is an OK murder mystery episode. But to me it wasn't anything special, and begins the rather long descent into mediocrity that DS9 couldn't seem to overcome during its first two years.

I guess I'd give it a B-.

The murder mystery should have taken a back seat to exploring Odo's reputation among Bajorans, and solving the murder should not have solved the suspicions that the Bajorans' had.

I'd say it was solid as an Odo piece. Past Prologue was the most interesting of the two with the introduction of Garak.

I've been rewatching DS9 as well. I'm currently watching Blood Oath. Surely the Albino had done something against the Federation , like some kind of attack or smuggling on one of the colonies or outposts near the Klingon border, and Sisko could have approved Dax- go after him to "try apprehend" the Albino...

The 4th episode of the season, Babel, is a medical mystery episode. The main symptom of this weaponized virus is that people babble. Colm Meaney as Miles O'Brien does the best with this jibberish imho! Funny and freaky stuff.

Another ok episode that I'd also say rates a B-.

But the later episodes of DS9, where most episodes seem to not only work on their own, but are also work as threads in a much larger tapestry, contributing to larger plots and themes, are obviously much stronger. That's the DS9 that fans know and love, and seeing these ok one-off episodes just makes that even more clear.

Anyway, here are the promos for this one:

I think the Odo/Quark relationship was something they had right from the beginning, and it's often a highlight of earlier episodes.

Whilst the concept itself of a station-wide virus was already a Trek cliche by this point, I think that there was a lot of nice character work in Babel. I particularly like Kira's desperation in trying to make things right, and also Quark enjoying himself in Ops when there's just him and Odo left.

"Captive Pursuit" is a pretty good episode. The idea of the hunt and hunted was something that DS9 and Voyager took up later. Are the Jem'Hadar related to Tosk?

TNG in its first few seasons tended toward the idealistic for its characters. That squeaky-clean tendency for federation officers had already shifted a bit toward ambiguity by Next Gen's fourth season, I think, but this episode does more along that line with O'Brien. But I feel like, in a way, he is maybe trying to fulfill the Prime Directive by helping Tosk....?

Anyway, I rate it a B+. Here are the original trailers:

Q-Less is a weak episode. I'm not a big Q fan to begin with, and I also really disliked the "Captain's Holiday" episode from TNG that this is more or less a sequel to.

My rating: C-

Seems like they were grasping at straws doing this one. But when you're stuck in the relentless production schedule that DS9 had to meet, sometimes it seems like they just had to go forward with the teleplays they had that met their budget.

Dax

This is another mostly weak episode for me. Dr. Bashir the first season is sometimes annoying, and I find him "making moves" on Dax beyond annoying and all the way to unpleasant. I like the Dax character ok, but she is not one of my favorites in the main cast. And the whole idea of the symbiont species is still is a bit weirdly handled to me (the "worm" part) even after 23 years of getting used to the idea. I guess there are a few good moment with Sisko and Odo, but overall I just don't care for this one.

C-

Captive Pursuits is one of my season one favorites. In retrospect, the theme of this story--how one chooses to go against one's nature--will be revisited many times in DS9, making this episode a cornerstone of the series.

Q-Less is good for the boxing match. Dax ... I've written too much on this episode's problems already.

Just watched Jem'Hadar. I'm wondering why Eris didn't react to Odo grabbing her arm right before she beamed away.

I know they probably hadn't decided that the founders would turn out to be Odo's species when they wrapped up Season Two but it seemed odd.
