Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

I actually thought that the trailer was really good. This is the first time I've had hope for this movie. I especially liked how they didn't seem to do any "LOL, I'm the fat one" jokes with McCarthy, since that seems to be the general tone of her humor when I've seen her before. I actually chuckled at the wig scene, and the "power of patty". As someone who thinks the old Ghostbuster movies are good but who doesn't have a real nostalgic connection to them like a lot of people do, this trailer has given me hope that this reboot will be pretty good. It could go either way, but its definitely got my attention.

It's still a full reboot. The trailer text is to hype up audiences to establish its nostalgic connection to the original (nothing wrong with that).

My disappointment is that it's not a sequel, but a reboot. I think a sequel with this cast and crew would have been terrific. It's not a dealbreaker, though; I still intend to watch this movie in theaters.

Actually, there IS something wrong with that, because it creates confusion and false expectations.

I thought the trailer was fine. I think there was so much hype that it would never meet expectations. I wasn't bowled away by Jurassic World trailer but loved that film. This film looks llike it may actually be quite good with interesting characters and I will definitely be going to see this when it comes out.

Trailer was okay. I was almost getting more of a "Men in Black" vibe from it than a "Ghostbusters" vibe. The thing that really made the original movie shine was the relationship between the characters, which I don't think we got a great impression of in this trailer. If they can make that work, this movie has a chance.

Same here. I understand why they went the reboot route, but I wish it were a sequel. The original set up the idea so nicely the notion of the Ghostbusters being a franchise. Also like you it's in no way a dealbreaker, and I am still looking forward to seeing it the theater.

The movie will do well or not on its own merits. Not because a few people might be confused if it's a reboot or sequel.

I thought she said it was the "power of panic".

I saw the original in the theater and will see this one there as well. I really liked the trailer for this new rendition. Seems I'm in a massive minority of people who liked it though. The youtube downvotes are pretty alarming.

Looks like fun!!!

Sadly, haters will hate. It's what haters do. They will not judge this picture for what it is, but for what it isn't to them; a complete sequel. Meh, let them. If I hate this, I'll hate it for what it is, not what some nostalgic fans think it should be.

Though -- HEY! The said four scientists saved NYC -- if they counted Winston as a scientist, then that's great!

Apparently, the 2009 video game (which is considered canonical) established that Winston has a Ph.D. in Egyptology, although it doesn't specify whether he got it before or after the movies. In the original script, according to Wikipedia, he was an ex-Marine with multiple degrees and was actually smarter and more qualified than the other three, though the filmmakers decided that one member of the team should be a layperson that the scientists could explain their technobabble to for the benefit of the audience.

Agreed all around. She probably has a much bigger role than Winston comparatively, but that also means that hopefully they'll use that room to develop her as more than (insert team role here), just like the cartoon. But it's Feig, so I think she'll be fleshed out properly, unlike Winston.

Still, it would've been nice if at least one of the scientific geniuses had been black. (I was going to say "or Asian," but that's a stereotype in itself.)

I didn't see the original at the cinema unfortunately (Saw it on Betamax the first time round). I thought the trailer was ok and would like to see this:)

Agreed. I just read this piece by Ernie Hudson in EW. In particular, this passage. It's pretty heartbreaking. It's the biz, but your points reminded me of this passage, specifically Winston's potential, the power of representation, and how Ernie (and we the audience) missed out on all of that:

I look back on Ghostbusters in a very fun way, but it’s got so many mixed feelings and emotions attached to it. When I originally got the script, the character of Winston was amazing and I thought it would be career-changing. The character came in right at the very beginning of the movie and had an elaborate background: he was an Air Force major something, a demolitions guy. It was great.

Now I’ve heard, over the years, that the part had been written for Eddie Murphy—all of which Ivan Reitman says is not true. But it was a bigger part, and Winston was there all the way through the movie. After a long audition process, I finally got the part and made the awful mistake of letting it be known that I really, really wanted it. In Hollywood in those days, you set your quote—so if anybody calls about wanting to work with you, they had to meet your quote. I had just worked with Columbia on Spacehunter, and my quote was pretty decent. For Ghostbusters, they came in at only half of my quote, because they said this role was going to make my career. I said to my agent, “I don’t care. Just take it, because I believe that.” So we go to New York and we rehearse for three weeks or whatever and I’m ready to roll.

The night before filming begins, however, I get this new script and it was shocking.

The character was gone. Instead of coming in at the very beginning of the movie, like page 8, the character came in on page 68 after the Ghostbusters were established. His elaborate background was all gone, replaced by me walking in and saying, “If there’s a steady paycheck in it, I’ll believe anything you say.” So that was pretty devastating.

I’m panicked. I don’t sleep that night. It was like my worst nightmare is happening. The next morning, I rush to the set and plead my case. And Ivan basically says, “The studio felt that they had Bill Murray, so they wanted to give him more stuff to do.” I go, “Okay, I understand that, but can I even be there when they’re established?” And of course, he said no, there’s nothing to do about it. It was kind of awkward, and it became sort of the elephant in the room.

I see this differently now—and I don’t mean any kind of animosity or anything towards anyone, certainly not towards Ivan or the guys. I was a single dad, and we were struggling to kind of hold on and pay the rent. I still needed to do this job. 30 years later, I look back at the movie and it works very well the way it is. I think the character works with what he has to work with. But I’ve always felt like, “Man, if I could’ve played that original character…”

Just heartbreaking stuff, really. I'm glad the cartoon did more, but that didn't involve or help Ernie Hudson.

I thought she said it was the "power of panic".

I initially heard "the power of pain", but she definitely says "the power of Patty".

Regarding the overall success of this film, I have a feeling that it's very much going to be a Men in Black 3 scenario where the film is much better than critical reception indicates and does very much recoup its budget and successfully relaunch the franchise.

That was a pretty meh trailer, definitely didn't set the world on fire.

Just a trailer though, the proof will be in the pudding - I've got high hopes for this cast.

As an addendum to my last post, I had thought that MiB 3 was less critically well-received than it was, but my overall point still stands that I think this movie will end up with a similar type of reception.

Slimer! And did anyone else catch the "That's a Big Twinkie" billboard in Times Square?

My thoughts exactly, I certainly wasn't bowled over by it.

Other than Wigg and Hemsworth, I can't say I've seen the other three main actors in anything.

There's also a billboard for Crackle, where you can watch (I believe) 2 dozen Real Ghostbusters episodes for free.

Since most of the ads I've seen for Feig and McCarthy's stuff has looked horrible to me, I've been really nervous about this one, but that trailer actually makes this look like it has potential. It wasn't anything amazing, but some of that was actually pretty funny. It looks like it could at least be a Netflix rental for me.

Not a bad trailer, but isn't really getting me pumped to see the film just yet. Although to be fair, I think a huge part of what made the original so good was just the freshness of the concept and watching those characters discover everything for the first time. And it's kinda hard to recapture that exact same feeling 30 years later now that we know all the rules.

And I was also bummed to see the same style of ghosts as before, which now seem awfully tame and family friendly by today's standards. From earlier interviews with Feig it sounded like they were going to have the characters facing off against creepier and more modern day style ghosts that we're accustomed to in today's horror movies (much like the original tackled the kind of ghostly apparitions people were used to from Poltergeist or Raiders of the Lost Ark), which I thought would have been a truly inspired way to update the concept. Watching a group of Ghostbusters go up against creepy dark haired little girls from the Ring or freaky wall-climbing creatures would have been freakin hilarious to see, and might have given the movie the same kind of edge the original had. But alas...

I just really hope they didn't spoil the movie by showing us *all* the ghosts already.

This did make me realize that there weren't many individual ghosts on screen in the original at all. Aside from the scene with all the balls/streaks of light, there was:
  1. Librarian
  2. Slimer
  3. Subway ghost
  4. Dream sequence ghost (technically not a "real" ghost)
  5. Taxi driver zombie/skeleton
  6. Terror Dogs (Zuul & Vinz Klortho)
  7. Gozer 1 (supermodel with the flat top)
  8. Gozer 2 (Stay Puft - for the longest time I thought this was a separate entity from Gozer)
Any I missed?
