Oh what could have been. The Bell Picturephone

I had one of those! The way the headset was shaped it was actually painful to use, and dialing took some getting used to. Sold it several years ago.

Same here. Fun looking, but awful to use...

Style over practicality. It does look good but maybe not a lot of thought went into user comfort, or how practical it would be to use. I mean what brain did that button layout?

I had a model of the Flying Scotsman that was also a phone and you picked up the boiler and cab to talk, earpiece on the bottom of the cab, and microphone under the end of the boiler. It wasn't easy to hold that with all the train parts on the sides.

Form Over Function, indeed! I agree that the phone was hard to actually use, but it was beyond awesome to actually have! Plus, in those days, we still had the capability to dial a code on our home phones which would check our ringers. I would occasionally excuse myself when company was over, to the other house phone, and dial the code, just so the house phones would ring, and the company could hear and see the "Red Alert" response! I KNOW, I KNOW! There is a sickness there, not yet identified by the APA!

But, I did it anyway!...

I can relate to that. I did this with the train phone.

...absolutely LOVED trains when I was younger, and modeled them. Still do love them, and a few summers ago, I had the great privilege of riding the Royal Scotsman on a Highlands trip. Truly, once in a lifetime!

Been like today: almost no one uses video calls.

Because outside of "grandma wants to see her grandson" situations, video calls are a fucking awful idea.
I don't want people to see me while I'm talking to them on the phone.

As much as I love the technology that allows us to do this I have to kind of agree. Because for me and my luck if it were popular people would call me at the wrong moment such as coming out the bathroom or the kitchen with a mouth full of food, or the toilet. I wouldn't want to see who I ring anyway, but I do love the technology.

I do find video calls via Skype desirable in some circumstances, but that's the exception rather than the rule. The Jetsons dealt with it this way...

Meanwhile people can't snap a picture these days without making sure their face in the shot. :)

The difference is you can pose for a selfie and keep retaking it until you like it. Live video, not so much.
