Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

From the very beginning I wished that JJ went with the Koerner version of the starship Enterprise. There is a disconnect with the audience. From the command chair to the control panels to the brewery location the engineering section was filmed in to the exterior design of the model itself... people just never warmed up to the thing.

Anyway. the whole ship had a sense of disorientation about it. You just never knew where anyone was for sure (except maybe the Bridge) and then it was still completely alien.

On the old CBS Star Trek message boards (now closed) I suggested a story line where this Enterprise loses the battle with the Doomsday Machine and the ship the survivors get is a Koerner class dubbed Enterprise.1 (NCC 1701.1). This was before the 2013 movie.

Actually, Sulu and Chekov also exchanged lines in "Amok Time". Sulu said something about going to Altair one minute, then back to Vulcan the next. Chekov responded by saying he was getting space sick.

Of course, that's not conversation.

The Enterprise is just another ship in these films; the new trailer shocked me how the ship was shredded into nothing. I hope it's temporary and the ship gets rebuilt super fast. These films had been Star Trek in name only, I hope this new one is more nautical.

Yeah. I posted above (I think it was this thread) that I've considered the Enterprise a character pretty much like the other seven. However, I think this is for realzies in STB. If I had time, I'd find the link, but I think it was Lin who said that this movie better reflects the state of conflict in this world post-911 compared to the Cold War days of TOS. He meant the big ships like the Enterprise and Klingon ships back then only fought other big ships (representing the superpowers), while the idea that cruder technology held in great numbers by lesser powers could actually be of far more danger to a superpower, as we know too well, today.

Scroll down. He mentions the "1960s sensibility" TOS had where "who has the bigger ship wins" as opposed to an attack by 40,000 40-foot ships.

Is it necessary for the Enterprise to be in battle in every movie and get beat so badly? The last 2 films the ship had to face some super, large ships, and there was never any nautical strategies like the TOS films. I doubt the folks at Bad Robot would ever treat their beloved Millennium Falcon that way.

Well considering that Star Wars wasn't big on nautical strategies, I would think they would.

TFA the Millennium Falcon was treated well and faithful. It didn't take a pounding at all.

Ignoring the non sequitur, are you suggesting that the Enterprise didn't get badly beaten in the TOS films?

Also, the Falcon is just a set-piece. It isn't intrinsic to the story like the Enterprise. So that's not really a valid comparison.

The Enterprise had nothing more than a scratch mark in the 09 movie and took heavy damage in Into Darkness. If it gets destroyed in the next one it's on par respectively with the original TOS films.

It (1701 Refit) did have a nautical strategic battle in 1 film TWOK, and the other film TSFS a bird of prey hit with a photon torpedo, but in III the ship didn't have full repairs. In TUC, the ship (1701-A) was again fighting a strategic battle and won, but badly beaten? No.

The Falcon was treated as a battered piece of junk in TFA, which Han Solo had an emotional connection to. Rey wanted another ship to get of Jakku!

I'm hoping this new film will be more about telling a story which reflects our time but I'm saddened the Enterprise is not treated like a character like in TOS. I feel the ship shouldn't be disposable. The Millennium Falcon was never and will never be disposable. I wish Bad Robot would have the same affection to the Star Trek property as Star Wars.
