That's why he said, "After the end credits...", meaning it took place "off camera". He was making a joke.

    Sincerely,

The hobo who swiped Mcoy's phaser may have been suffering from consumtion or even heart disease and died during the night.
Pulling folks out of time opens up a lot of butterfly effect possible changes but not neccessarily direct contact. For instance, the hobo may have had a family and when he didn't come home that night and nobody ever found his body or saw him again, his wife may never have re-married in the vain hope that one day he would come home. But in the unchanged time line, when the police informed her he was found dead in an alley she moved on with her life, met and married a temperate man and the child she had with the new husband grew up and became a Senator or an axe wielding murderer thus changing the world down the line.

That's all true, but, in the end, the Guardian said that time had been restored. Ergo, the disappearance of that sad character did not affect the timeline.

    Good point, CorporalCaptain

"Come! many such journeys are possible!" makes the Guardian just a bigger What-if" machine that Professor Farnsworth invents

How can we be sure there WAS a reality before McCoy arrived? He could have been part of events all along. A predestination paradox. There's no way to disprove that...

As for Ellison's version: I don't agree with his version of Kirk, i.e. Kirk trying to save Edith even knowing what this would cause. How could anyone trust Kirk ever again, knowing that he would sacrifice billions of people just for one woman? Kirk would be placing his own happiness above the proper flow of history, and he is not supposed to be like that.

Ellison's version would have worked as a stand-alone story, or an episode of a sci-fi anthology. But it wasn't Star Trek. Kirk had to sacrifice his personal happiness for the sake of the greater good. He's the hero; that's his job!

Well, you can't prove or disprove any of it. Time travel is all a bunch of hooey anyway.

Still, I thought of that - the whole "you are part of history, you HAD to be there to make things happen" thing, but you know, it's just easier on the brain to have shit make sense...

And how would they accomplish that? Stand in the street and call out really loud hoping that the Guardian could hear them?

Fulfilling exacting criteria in order to placate the time donut is a far less heroic sounding plot than saving history.

The time donut, as you call it, seemed to respond only to whether history was actually restored. There's no evidence of placation.

Actually, the condition for their return is spelled out in dialog...
Ergo, they have restore the flow of history in order to come back. How they magically get back into their uniforms is another question.

The donut's as good as his word. If they had never gone, they wouldn't have changed clothes. (Of course that means McCoy wouldn't have recovered from the cordrazine yet, either...)

How did the tricorder get both futures for Edith? They were taping before McCoy jumped so the future for Edith was not to be killed. The second time they were recording again before McCoy jumped and they jumped before McCoy jumped, so the future would still be Edith living. They could not have recorded Edith being killed at anytime.

It is not uncommon for people throughout history to understand their current world situation--from the politics (particularly the failed end of that), the idealism, potential, even technology to see that present day players have the potential to take society in natural, likely directions. That is not baseless or mere dreaming, but being aware of the world in ways beyond the base level of thought of John Q. Public who only sees the here and now.

Ha---not a series where transporters, "slingshot effects" and alien life exist.

One good reason why dead threads shouldn't be bumped, saulsm. You're talking to someone who doesn't post here anymore. Let's put this one back in the grave where it belongs.

And yes, welcome to the board!
