I don't see how Wesley could be overrated, so many people hated him. Underrated, yes, but not overrated...

I wasn't saying overrated from a fans pov, I was saying he was from the crews pov. They treated him like he was some kind of prodigy, namely Riker and that alien dude.

So which is this thread referring to, the fans perspective or the crews?

Interesting, I hadn't even considered that.

Overrated from the crew's point of view would have to be Deanna "He's hiding something" Troi. Wesley did save the ship on numerous occasions, which is pretty good for a 15 year old, and he was right about Lore.

If we're talking about who the crew themselves overrated then I'll have to go with Troi too. I love Deanna but her empathic powers amounted to stating the obvious. I'm sure she was a good psychiatrist although we didn't see enough of her doing it thanks to Guinan.

They should have stuck with the original concept for the ship's counselor - much more political officer than therapist. Troi's Tal Shiar episode was one of the best for the character, IMO, and Sirtis's characters on Stargate and NCIS seem to agree with my assessment, too.

I voted Yar, though. All respect to Denise Crosby - who did a great job on The Walking Dead much more recently - but her acting as Yar was terrible. And then once she left the show, some sort of fondness for the actress/character in the showrunners and/or fandom resulted in them bringing her back in "Yesterday's Enterprise" - where thankfully her acting was tolerable - and then again as Sela. And as Sela, the bad acting returned with her.

Yet, somehow, Yar and even moreso, Sela, seem to be fan favorites - and I don't get it at all.

I picked Picard as an overrated character. He was boring, self-righteous, and a bit too over dramatic. (Some people like that. Unfortunately, I wasn't one of them). Although, I'm surprised that Data and Riker are going neck in neck.

Data can be cheesy if not handled well (e.g. Data's Day, the bits in Generations, etc.) but he's an interesting character when handled correctly (e.g. the 'toys' one where he gets so angry he's about to shoot his captor, then brushes it off when he gets back to the ship).

Riker was always 'meh' to me. He didn't like it when Deanna dated out, even when they weren't officially together, yet he was always written or hinted at dating or sleeping with women. He was also a bit by the book when he wanted to be; he was one of those who very much liked his authority and would exercise that authority just because. (As I type this, there is a 'Riker-like' character I knew of who was a former boss. I didn't have a problem with him, but I knew other employees who did. Too, it's interesting that he actually did move from a 'second-in-command' position to a 'commanding officer' position after the year I knew him).

This is a tough one. The easiest choice is Wesley. But I have to think about Data (no he was just plain awesome), Riker (was he really that good of a command prospect to be second banana for like 20 years?), Troi (how much did her empathetic abilities really help?). I think I will just stick with Wesley.

I would say Riker because he was supposed to be the Kirk of the show and he wasn't great. Still the second best XO of the Trek shows though.

1. Spock
2. Riker
3. Kira
4. Chakotay
5. I didn't watch Enterprise

I would suggest Guinan's occasional pop-ups but she sure knew about the Borg so I will put her down as a pest, as I see Lwaxana.

DATA.

He came off as the SPOCK type special guy, claims his brain and physiology can be human like but never reaches his full potential. Lore fulfilled his abilities more than him. He's vulnerable by touching buttons in his spine to shut off, Soong can manipulate his programming through subspace and make him commit treason-like offenses, he's not that reliable in "Cause and Effect" where his choices caused the Enterprise to blow up 17 times. I can remember there were other alien programming where he was manipulated.
I wish I could mention the incompetence he had in ST Generations, but I never thought he was a great character besides him moving faster than a humanoid. I didn't hate Data, and he was useful to the writers who loved writing his character, but he's overrated.

I might have voted Data. As in it's too easy to wind up with the token robot looking ridiculous. Particularly as it would be an actor obviously dressed up in skin paint.

But I think Spiner did a platinum standard job with that character once the series moved beyond the first season. That was perfect casting.

Perfect casting??? But... there wasn't another actor who portrayed the character other than Spiner, and its not as if DATA was based on a best selling novel adapted for television.
