Doctor Who pulled from Netflix

I wonder if this has anything to do with the notion that it's possibly 20 months until the next season comes out?

Either because nerds only binge before a new season starts, or because the beeb is starving for revenue from Who and tried to gouge Netflix and overplayed their hand.

Alternatively, Netflix is not the only game in town. The beeb might have gotten a better offer quietly, and then Netflix made a big deal about saving face by seeming to be the prime mover.

Hulu plus.

Amazon Instant.

Googleplay

Itunes.

I also heard the BBC was planning to launch their own streaming service in the US sometime this year. Maybe that's related to this?

I'm not saying it won't happen, because it might. I will say that Netflix was supposed to drop Doctor Who on February 1st for the last two years as well.

Yeah, this happens every year. It is just them renegotiating the streaming rights. The only way it ACTUALLY goes away is if they can't come to a deal satisfactory to both sides.

That was a joke.

But last I checked, 5 years ago, yes it is.

But it's completely legal, and unusable without a creditcard.

(google, google)

After a US$2.43 million takeover offer by the Private Media Group, an adult entertainment company,[32] Napster's brand and logos were acquired at bankruptcy auction by Roxiowhich used them to rebrand the Pressplay music service as Napster 2.0.

In September 2008, Napster was purchased by US electronics retailer Best Buy for US $121 million.[33]

On December 1, 2011, pursuant to a deal with Best Buy, Napster merged with Rhapsody. Best Buy will receive a minority stake in Rhapsody.[34]

Originally I was going to make a joke about the publicly FBI DESTROYED Megavideo (the streaming service attached to megaupload) but on reflection, it seemed like the news that that place is a smoking crater might not be common knowledge enough to avoid my ankles getting clipped by the banstick here.

Oh. Yeah I knew of it but never used it.

Netflix is supposed to be convenient but now it's becoming less convenient.

I miss video rental stores.

10 (weekly rental) videos for 10 dollars, that without skipping a beat became 10 (weekly rental) dvds for 10 dollars.

That stopped when I got cable.

NuWho is already on Hulu plus, up to Series 8.
Me, I buy & rip the blu-rays. I can watch 'em anywhere, anytime.

Does The Man see that as as criminal as downloading other peoples Rips?

At one point in some countries we're allowed to make one legal back up copy, but no more than one.

The law is silly.

That's the first time I've seen Hulu mentioned. Clearly the Beeb is looking to get more money one way or another.
As far as NuWho, I have all the DVD's & blu-rays, so not a big deal for me. Did Netflix have the classic series? Maybe it's about pushing out overstock of DVD's.
Could Amazon be getting exclusive rights? They already have other BBC shows on Prime.

I also heard the BBC was planning to launch their own streaming service in the US sometime this year. Maybe that's related to this?

We have iplayer here (which to be honest pushed the envelope for streaming/catch-up) when it launched and I do know that there is talk of launching it in other territories, I just thought it would be more "local."

Did Netflix have the classic series?.
Netflix has had the same seemingly random cherry picked selections since the beginning of time. Amazon Streaming had the same selections plus a couple of others. If nothing else, it would be nice if whoever has it would stream the entire series.

Might I point out that I think this is for the US only?

A few days ago, in the Netherlands, season 8 had a note saying that that was leaving, but nothing about the rest. That note has now disappeared, and there's nothing on Dutch Netflix about the show leaving.

*EDIT* Just logged in, there's nothing on Dutch Netflix about the show leaving, so I guess we'll see.
There's national rights and international rights when it comes to what Netflix can stream I believe. There are quite a few shows that the Dutch Netflix doesn't have, because some national tv-shows still own the rights to them. So yeah, the whole thing about BBC wanting to provide a streaming service for the UK and US makes sense.
