old movie posters with the JJ crew

I think the problem is they're just so over-designed. And there's just too much red. Even the Red Surge does more to break up the constant sea of red. When there are a bunch of Mounties standing together, the shoulder straps and hats really make a big difference.
Spock doesn't really look very good in a hat. ;)

I made one back when the poster for the first movie came out.

The maroons are "busy" uniforms, but God help me, I like them. I think it's because Nimoy and Shatner wore them so well. Especially Nimoy.
Absolutely. By far my favourite Trek uniform. And they followed my least favourite, the horrible pyjamas of TMP. The Maroon era was the only time Starfleet ever felt like it had a realistic variety of uniforms for different times and purposes, and more subtle divisions than 'science' were a positive. Until the variety offered by the JJ films the closest we've come to seeing a mix of uniforms for different occasions was DS9 who implied a jumpsuit for less formal postings and at least offered a flak jacket-like combat variant.

To be fair: Photoshop is only the tool, many just give into the easy temptation of cheese, when they use it. Artists have always used all technology that was available, even if they don't or didn't admit it.

Movie posters across the genres seem to have fallen into tropes and are generally quite uninspired. I'd love to see something a bit more original than guy-with-gun-looks-over-his-shoulder or giant-bowed-head-of-lead-actor

Agreed. Within Trek, I thought the ST09 poster of the Enterprise at warp was very nice. It was stark but dynamic and attention getting. Familiar but different, too. It wasn't original art so much as it captured a moment in the movie, but the choice of presentation made it artistic.

Though my favorite uniforms are the TMP for their "aesthetic futuristic", the TWOK uniforms are fine...but only as "dress uniforms". Wasn't there a plan to have duty uniforms at one point? At any rate, I think the "bomber jackets" (the one that Scotty and Morrow wore in ST3, and the one Kirk wore in ST5) could have been duty uniforms for officers at least. Or, maybe a vest version could have worked. The uniforms from FC and onward are my third favorite set of clothes.

TWOK uniforms were definitely not "action" uniforms. Probably are best thought of as a more formal uniform choice. Thoug I like them, I still can't see them as practical when physical activity or "getting dirty" planet side is required.

For me, The Maroon Monsters were probably by favourite uniform, but were a bit too dressy for day to day use (at least in my opinion)

My favourite uniforms are from the most recent films. Still not very interested in the upcoming ones. But it's an exceedingly minor issue to me.

I don't think those are posters; they're retailer incentive alternate covers for the upcoming IDW miniseries "Manifest Destiny".

True. But they're takes on the Trek movie posters. Which led to the broader comments about movie posters.
