CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

He should have thought things through a little bit more then. People here were saying they were going to get sued during the first Kickstarter. If we could see it coming, why couldn't Peters?

When fan films first started doing fundraisers a few years back, I thought that CBS were going to jump in, but they didn't. I guess he thought he was safe behind the 'they're doing it too'. Even though he was doing far more than anyone else was doing.

So in order to make Axanar (or not-Axanar) they would obviously still have to go back to the well. I find it highly unlikely they'll match even the previous 500k after this.

Oh God no. They only got this much because of the name.

So, they would have two or three BIG hurdles to overcome.

1: Going back to the well a third or fourth time is going to have limited success.
2: They won't have the built-in fanbase from "Star Trek". If they go with Star Wolf they'll get all the fans that a sci-fi writer who hasn't published in 10-20 years would get. That's not exactly the tentpole of television sci-fi that Star Trek brings.
3: They've been sued. That's bound to turn off a few people.

Whose even gonna care after seven or eight years if this ever gets made?

I'm sure there will always be some rabid fans waiting for this - but even they have limited funds.

I'm surprised they haven't set something up where you can automatically donate $30 dollars every month until it's filmed.

I'm curious... If CBS demand all the perks are never sent out/destroyed, would those that already have them be asked to also send them in?

You can't really blame Alec for not wanting to back down. He's been working on this for maybe four or five years (I honestly don't know). That's a long time to spend on any project. Though one would expect there to be more to show apart from a twenty-minute prelude.

I don't disagree with that. I can even empathize.

What he can be held responsible for, and has to deal with now, is absolutely abysmal judgment both in letting the scope of the project get out of hand - and even that is understandable, if indicative of a real impulse control problem - and in his attitude toward and response to the owners of Star Trek as expressed in both words and actions.

I don't blame him for stubbornness or pride. In his place I might have done much of what he's done. At some point though, if things continue to mount against, he'll have to be willing to humble himself to some degree and apologize to his donors; even if he thought he wasn't doing anything wrong, ignorance of the rules is no excuse.

Someone determined to do right by his supporters would have reached out to CBS and Paramount to find a positive resolution at a dozen different points along the way, before AND after the lawsuit was filed, before AND after crowdfunding.

If it were me i'd like to think the satisfaction of my donors were high on my list of priorities, and I'd also like to think i'd try to find ways to make refunds an option.

Which isn't unreasonable. For myself, if a generic sci-fi version of Axanar got made, I'd probably be ok with it. Not quite what I would've wanted, but something at least for my investment and I'd still get the same basic story.

But your opinion may not be shared by all donors. If it were me, i'd give donors incentives for accepting replacements (bonus' as he says) but I would also make a refund an option for those who don't want it. Given the number of donors (over 8500 on Kickstarter) i'm willing to bet there's a fair amount of people that only wanted it because it was Star Trek and are uninterested in "Generic Sci Fi Action Movie Not Starring Tony Todd Anymore."

Don't give them any ideas.
I hate to break it to you....

If its a fan film, it needs no full time employees

No problem, as many others have said before, with those that legally have to be paid the full whack such as qualified electricians...

If CBS ask for the perks to be destroyed where does that leave those that have already got them? Would they have to return them?

Once the item is sent out there's no way they can force people to send them back. What i would guess is that CBS/Paramount would want an accounting of offending products in the hands of consumers and a total compensation package commensurate to the amount of product they put in the market.

Ah... Thanks for explaining that

Take a look at the comments on their kickstarter. Things are turning sour-- lots of unhappy donors. Not sure how many of those comments are the same people in this thread, but it's an indication that not every supporter will be all too happy with "replacement items."

I do. Of course, I'm not privy to the inner machinations of Axanar Productions, but outwardly he bans, removes, deletes, ignores and simultaneously fights any remark that doesn't paint him as a visionary.

That's beyond stubbornness or pride. That's megalomania.
