If you mean the droid from his Jedi starfighter, he probably didn't "own" that any more than an Air Force pilot owns the computer hardware in his jet.

R2 was Anakiin's droid, I don't recall Obi-Wan ever owning one himself. R4 came with his fighter.
No, Luke says the droid claimed to be the property of an Obi-Wan Kenobi meaning that Obi-Wan must've owned him at some point.
That's an interesting take as it retroactively directs that comment at R2 instead of Luke, in a "oh, so *I'm* your owner now am I?" kind of way. Oddly enough, this actually works quite well with the kind of inflection Guinness put on said line. His interaction with R2 when he first shows up also compliments this idea quite well.
Of course it's entirely possible that Kenobi simply didn't recognise R2. There must be thousands of blue and white R2s in the galaxy...but then how many of them are likely to also have a golden 3PO in tow...and a Skywalker...on Tatooine...Yeah, there's no way he didn't put that together.
And then there's old Ben looking at the past through some very rose-colored glasses... Anakin "was a good friend." When exactly was he a good friend, and not a whining jerk?
Sure, the Clone Wars series does show Obi-Wan and Anakin being friends, but you never actually get that sense from the movies. Sometimes I feel like the whole point of TCW is to fix the problems with the prequel trilogy. That shouldn't have been necessary in the first place.

They seemed like good friends in AOTC to me, bantering back and forth like Leia and Han Solo. And they must have been in the years between the first two movies.

Cringe-inducing line aside, at least the got the sentiment right. Though you'd think she would be on the floor asking people why they are giving total control to someone who looks like Nosferatu and acts like Ming the Merciless.
Why? It was obviously Leia who imprinted R2 mission. There's no reason not to believe Kenobi that he can't remember ever owning a droid. Asa Jedi he lived a pretty spartan life, I always thought that was one of the cooler thigns about him.
Because it would feel less like watching a Star Wars fanfic written by a middle schooler and six films with connected history.
I never said there was. I simply think it would have been nice watching the prequels made fans of the originals go "oooooooh" as they see how the pieces fit together instead of "whaaaaaaa?" as they see the opposite.
Nio, it's just one more reason to try and find something to hate about the Prequels. It's just easier to accept that Kenobi told the truth because there's nothing onscreen that disagrees with his statement.
And we would then be shown a pair of armed Stormtroopers standing behind every single Senate pod, ready to gun down the first politician who showed anything less than total enthusiasm...
Joss Whedon has said that, that's his second favorite scene in the first six Star Was movie. And rally Palpatine came off as victim of an attemtped assassination by the Jedi, he had plenty of support for him becoming Emperor.
I think it was just sloppy writing mostly, as seems to be the case through the prequels. Leia should have been with Padme for awhile, to coincide with Leia's vague memory of her.
But its like Anakin's lightsaber, could have been a great scene for Obi-Wan and Anakin to have, to entrust Obi-Wan to give Anakin's lightsaber to Luke, instead it makes Obi-Wan seem even more of a liar. So much of the prequels missed the boat.

Why would someone need a reason to try to find something to hate? People either like a movie, or they don't. A person don't need to search for reasons to not like a movie.
I don't care what we would be shown. What we were shown was Padme ineffectively whinging on the sidelines as the Emperor takes over the galaxy.
So if Obama showed up looking like a monster, claiming he was injured during an assassination attempt, offering no proof that such an attempt took place, it would make sense to vote him into office for life?
