MLB Offseason: February 15 isn't THAT far away...

Paul Sullivan (beat writer and columnist for the Chicago Tribune, also a noted shithead) has unveiled his Hall of Fame ballot: Griffey, Raines and ... Lee Smith.

For a ballot that includes dudes like Bonds, Piazza, Bagwell, Schilling, Clemens, Mussina, Trammell and others, that's almost as contrarian as the shit that Murray Chass turns in every year (this year, his ballot was just Griffey).
 
What's the difference at this point? BBWAA has their heads so far up their own asses, they can't figure out what the hell is going on anymore. 1000 different agendas, no coherent plan, just random crap. Sometimes it generally works out, oft times they're screwing someone or other to make a point (in their own minds, but doesn't come across to anyone else). The NFL HoF is more exclusive, not aruging for the smaller numbers, but I like the idea of just a smaller group of people (that mostly know what they're talking about) sitting around in a room and arguing about it, making their cases, and having to convince others to vote for their choices. They err on the side of not letting guys in, but it doesn't really feel like they whiff and let in guys that don't belong either. even if the guy was funny in interviews or nice to the beat writers.
 
It looks like the folks at the Hall screwed up and accidentally leaked the results; Griffey and Piazza appear to be the only two who made it.

Edit: Also, according to Joel Sherman, the Dodgers' physical of Maeda turned up a whole bunch of medical issues, particularly with his elbow, which is how they got him for 8 / 25 with a bucketload of performance-related bonuses.

I'm very happy that Mike Piazza was selected to the Hall of Fame. I have never been to Cooperstown, so I'm excited that my first visit will be to see him inducted.
 
Don't mind the two of them in, was annoyed by the rumor that Tim Raines was also going to get in, but just missed. Personally, he's one of those "hall of very good" kinds of guys that just doesn't scream HOF to me. I wouldn't put Kenny Lofton in, and his stats are pretty much a tick above Raines in about every category (plus played a harder position).

Entertaining that only 2-3 people a year make it, despite writers bitching about only having 10 votes. You'd think more would get it if they think they should be voting for 15. Shouldn't that mean there are at least 5-6 consensus guys?

Saw Schilling still missed, but is gaining ground. Feels like one of those guys that will get over the hump in a year or two. Kinda hate that part of the process, where people gain and lose ground in this thing. They kinda ARE or AREN'T HOF guys, right? How do guys get better or worse over a 15 year voting period without touching a baseball?

Raines is basically the greatest leadoff hitter not named Henderson, at least of that era. His stolen base percentage was absolutely unreal, and he somehow led the league in BB, 1B, 2B and 3B for something like six or seven years. Six years of at least seventy stolen bases. Dude had an otherworldly ability to get on base and managed to have some pop, too. He's a no-brainer Hall guy for me. (Honestly, I would have voted for Lofton, too.)

That's what happens when you have ballots with a huge logjam, like the last few years. Edgar, Larry Walker and Alan Trammell all experienced huge drops over the past few years because they had the misfortune of being on the same ballot in years when guys like Griffey, Piazza, Biggio, Maddux, Smoltz, Unit, Pedro, Thomas, et al., have come up. Next year brings up Pudge, Manny and Vlad, 2018 adds Chipper and Thome and some marginal cases in Rolen and Moyer, and even in 2019 you've got Mo Rivera, Halladay, Helton, Pettite, Berkman and Oswalt coming up.

Guess I'm good with it being more selective, as about half the names you mentioned don't do it for me. Why's Pettite a hall of fame player, for example? Or Oswalt? Or Vlad? Manny would be a yes unless you get into the steroid argument again, in which case, he's in the same muddy water that Bonds/Clemens are in (but somehow Pettite is safe from?)

Is Pettite safe?
 
I don't see why he's being treated differently, he's another admitted PED guy. He seems to get somewhat of a pass because they bought off on the 'only used it once, just trying to get back and help my team' line of reasoning.

Some guys get killed for the PED thing, he just seems to be in the 'eh, it's ok, he's a nice guy' bucket for some reason.

I'd argue that he's ALSO not a HoF guy, but can have that debate. And like I said, I prefer it more exclusive. Never watched Andy and thought I was watching amazing, HoF-level player that needed a plaque. Good guy, played a long time, happy to have him on my team, but he wasn't a Pedro or Kaufax kinda guy. Few are, but that's kinda my argument.

I mean, if I played baseball for 30 years, and hit .200 with middling defense the whole time, I'd get like 6000 hits and people would want me in as hit leader. Other than managing to stand upright in a uniform for 30 years, is that transcendent play? No. Maybe put something in the regular section about how I've got that record and it was amazing i never broke down or whatever, but doesn't require a bronze bust on a plaque in the main hall..,.

I'm sorry Scout, who is treating him differently?

I'd say if Schilling can get in, his record is definitely good enough.

But I'm not sure either should get in based on their numbers, especially Schilling.
 
I think if you're on the fringe statistically with unpopular opinions and in the public eye it's hard to get elected.

Two out of the three, maybe. Schilling is a 3-banger.
