Well, if you roll back in this thread, I made just that point, that many published Trek books are not qualitatively better than fan-fic. It might be a little disrespectful to say that, but it's true. Whether you have someone bless your work as legit or not doesn't put it on another plane of existence qualitatively.

Pardon? The ship is basically symmetrical top and bottom, and the wings are non aerodynamic slabs. It couldn't fly anyway without antigravity any more than a TIE fighter, so its movements make as much sense upside down as right side up: none.
The other X Wings that turned to port/left made a port/left spin whereas this tricky bugger made a port/left rudder slew. I think its the same one that gets blown up in the trench run scene at Starkiller Base with a single hit to the port upper engine

All of this broke while I was on vacation and last night was the first night I'd been behind a computer for about 8 days.
I've read through about 40 pages on this thread and it's kind of getting repetitive, so I'm just going to make my comments now. First off, I greatly enjoyed "Prelude" and was looking forward to the full production. I'm sorry that it now appears that it will never see the light of day.
It certainly seems that Mr. Peters has read one too many of his own press releases and comes across as somewhat of a megalomaniac. But you gotta be a little bit nuts to think that you can take a couple of mil and make a movie as good as the pros can with a budget exceeding that by close to a couple of orders of magnitude. (Of course it helps that the pros are setting the bar a little low these days.)
I also enjoy NVP2 and STC and truly hope that the actions of Mr. Peters don't end up dragging the entirety of fan productions down with him.
I don't blame Paramount/CBS for taking this action as it does seem, assuming the stuff I've read here to be true, that some of Mr. Peters' actions were pretty egregious.
Raising $$$ to make a film should be OK as long as every nickle ends up as part of the project and doesn't go to salaries for the producers or to establish an ongoing concern unrelated to the project itself.
Criticizing the actions of Axanar or Paramount/CBS I'm fine with. I'm not fine with criticizing other people for what they like or don't like. I might say that I like this Trek or didn't care for that, but I wouldn't call someone a name because they had other opinions. Face it, if there ever was a group that ought to be tolerant of other people's tastes, it's Star Trek fans.
Around the point I bailed on the read-through of this thread someone posted a thing on copyright laws, and you know what, I kind of agree with the premise. Anybody ever read a story called "Melancholy Elephants" by Spider Robinson?
I think that control over a property ought to last long enough for you and your last living child to benefit, but no longer. If you sell it then the property goes public X number of years later. But that's just my feeling on the subject, the law is now what the law is now.

Back in the Official Axanar Podcast, episode 20, Alec said that he wanted to start a subscription-based sci-fi portal or cable channel out of Ares Studios.
It starts around the 45:00 mark. He doesn't delineate that it would be something he is on the hook for.

They are currently involved in a copyright infringement lawsuit over TBBT.
Wow is appears Mr. Peters has a case of:

I guess he doesn't realize that even deleted social media comments on Twitter and Facebook can be subpoenaed and both services still archive such in case law enforcement or anther agency wants them as evidence for litigation. Again, for someone who claims to be 'a lawyer' he sure likes to dig himself into bigger and bigger holes, that will come out IF this gets to trial. I wonder if he'll be dumb enough that he ends up perjuring himself on the stand. It's astonishing to me that he just can't shut up and stop making his case worse with everything he posts.
(BTW in a California Civil trial there is no 5th amendment protection/right to NOT take the stand as a witness against yourself as that ONLY applies to Criminal matters where the state can deprive you of your freedom.)

Sure. What do you think about Kickstarter's liability in this in terms of their allowing these projects when their rules clearly state projects musty have the rights to the I.P.? They can't claim they were ignorant of this.

Aaaand I have been banned from the group. I was polite, I was kind, I was understanding, but I refused to believe that everything was going to be super awesome for Axanar.
If I was Peters's attorney, I'd be impleading them. But the thing of it is, win or lose, he'd be burning the bridge there, big time, and would probably find he suddenly could no longer crowdfund, anywhere (even at GoFundMe or Patreon or any another place where he has not yet tried to get $$). So you do a cost-benefit analysis. Better to implead them now, or gamble that you can use 'em for crowdfunding later?
I'd advise to implead them now, as this is the more immediate issue, and future crowdfunding is a much more dubious thing.
