Force Awakens Deleted Scenes (SPOILERS)

Was this in he novelization or deleted scenes? I don't remember any of this from the movie. If true, it would definitely make some sense as to how things got as bad as they did.

It's stuff from the official website and the novelization. Sadly, none of it is in the movie aside from a glancing reference in Hux's Hitler speech.

We only saw one Star Destroyer from what I recall. And it is hardly super in any way. Its basically the same old Imperial Star Destroyer with the superstructure lengthened to cover most of the ship, and replacing the command tower with a shorter one.
[...]

It is suppossed to be 1.81 miles in length compared to the old ISDs 1.0 mile length, which gives it roughly 6 times the internal volume.

Right - so maybe not Executor-size but definitely much bigger than an Imperator or Interdictor class.

BTW, did anyone think that one Star Destroyer that Rey was scavenging through was big enough to be an Executor? IIRC, there were more than just the one that crashed into Death Star II in RotJ, maybe 3 or 4 total, and it had a lot more (and bigger) engine thruster nozzles than a standard SD.

The back of it can be clearly seen and it matches the standard ISD from ESB. The ship she flies the Falcon in seems to be a turned over SSD. She enters one of the engines of the central array of three and to one side in the background of the scene you can see one of the four other engine arrays of the SSD.

[Edit to add:] The old EU says, that just before ESB there were four SSD in service (probably not counting the one build at the same time as Executor in secret under the surface Coruscant).

In the books about the Battle of Jakku, by a year after Endor, there was only one SSD left in service. And it looks like it crashed and burned at Jakku. Seems the Republic figured out how to take them out effectively at Endor.

I didn't realize the new First Order Star Destroyer (called the Resurgent-class) was nearly 3 kilometers long (2,915.81 meters, and odd length since it doesn't equal a solid number in feet or inches). Also the background information suggest that this isn't there largest ship class.

This is Abrams we're talking about. What did you expect? Bigger = more menacing. He does, and did a lot of things right. But pacing and antagonists are not his strengths.

He nailed the tone while creating a wonderful, fun, and tangible universe. Now we just need Johnson/Trevorrow to allow us to breath while in this universe, and create some more compelling antagonists/narratives. TFA really is the ANH hope of the new trilogy.

Han was just having a bit of fun. Personally, I think they still crammed too much into this movie. They could've streamlined it a bit more, condensed some of the locations together. There are too many locations. Really, you could remove Maz & her planet entirely from the movie and not lose anything.

I agree that there was too many set pieces. But I think we needed more time on Maz's planet. That should have been the new saga's cantina. And they could have dug a little deeper in to some of the characters while there. There was character development happening there that furthered the plot, and we needed more of it.

What I would have liked cut was the whole freighter sequence. Comparatively there was nothing here to further the plot, and it was basically just a wink to the audience. The whole smugglers life for Han/Chewie angle could have been achieved in 5 seconds at Maz's planet in a Han shoots first scenario. Providing Abrams with an opportunity to not only throw the finger up at the special editions, but have a wink at the audience, as he loves to do. We didn't need to dedicate 4 minutes to that commentary. And if you really needed to throw a monster in there, you could have done it on Jakku, or Maz's planet.

And then you could use that screen time you saved split between having a little more exposition in the opening scene(so we actually cared about Von Sydow's death/knew exactly who he is), and possibly screen time for Captain Phasma, to make her more bad ass. For example, that whole fight between Finn and random Storm Trooper. It would have been much cooler if that was Phasma, and she kicked Finns butt. I expected her to be totally kick ass. But all she did was have a couple scenes, and finally wilt under duress.

The pacing was not great in my opinion. There was not enough time for me to breath. Usually I don't say a film needs more expository moments, but this one needs it, if anything just to catch our breath. Any time this movie slowed down, 50% of the time it was just slow for slowness sake.

Maybe my perspective on those scenes will change after the entire trilogy comes out, but right now, I feel this film could have improved a lot with what they did, and did not leave on the editing room floor.

I think it's a given that the next film will be a "flashback/forward" one, in which all the character development missing from Ep VII will be dealt with. Kylo Ren's history, Rey's history, Han/Leia split, etc.... They will all be shown.

I hope so at least. I will be disappointed if ep 8/9 doesn't put a lot of these missing pieces of information from 7 in to perspective.

But I still think the film would have benefited from the changes I mentioned. I found that freighter sequence jarring personally.

I agree with all this, nicely put. I still haven't been able to rate episode 7 yet because it's an incomplete story. A lot of my final opinion is reliant upon how well episode 8 tie in to this one. I know Abrams is big on fan-service and retooling old ideas, so hopefully the next director takes the time to flesh out the new stuff. I'm also hoping the studio doesn't end up strangling creativity like an overprotective parent. The temptation with Star Wars is to play it safe, since it's such an important property.

I found that freighter sequence jarring personally.

I thought it was unnecessarily obnoxious and didn't really fit in with the rest of the film.

However, it really isn't a Star Wars movie without a random battle against a gigantic alien monster.
