CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

I personally am wondering just what a forensic analysis of Axanar's finances would show. Call me a cynic, but I have to wonder if some of the money isn't stashed in a Cayman Islands bank account. Hate to be that suspicious of what I hoped would be a really nice production, but I'm really soured on what Axanar has become. Alec kind of reminds me of Jim Bakker just before PTL went down the drain.

I don't think anything nefarious is going on at Axanar... I think these are largely unexperienced film makers who made a ton of money the first time around, greatly expanded their ambitions, and found themselves out of their own depth... and now they are barely treading water... well were barely treading water...

I feel sorry for the people who gave money, and time, and work towards this project. I really just wanted to read the script, and that's why I donated... Guess I won't see that now....

:rommie::rommie::rommie: Great analogy.

I was excited to see it.......Enjoyed prelude....but when they kept ringing the bell for more cash I got a baaaaaaaaad feeling.

OT, but I wonder how this will affect Phase II... Isn't James Cawley's Captain Kirk replacement a paid actor? I wonder if we'll see him back in the center seat again...

It isn't actors getting pay that is a huge issue... it's producers getting pay... and in this case Alec is claiming a (small admiringly) salary from Axanar... We can discuss the merits of him being paid if you want, but that seems to be a BIG no no....

To my knowledge, SAG union actors are to be paid when working on any film project (including fan films). It is usually at scale though, so on the low end.

I have a feeling they will all be holding their collective breath until this plays out a bit more...........

I did not know that Tony Todd left the production 4 months ago.......was that common knowledge? =

Here's the thing: it takes time to mount a legal case. A legal department can toss out a C&D like that, but if you're actually going to file suit your legal team has to assemble a case that they are certain they can win. You don't rush that. I'm certain they've been building this case for months.

Well now, there's a point: CBS could have ended this with a C&D but they're choosing instead to spend a great deal more time and money to prosecute.

Ouch.

Who knows?

Bummer. I'm not big on the fan films, finding most of the acting to be wooden and the stories to be fan service, but I was looking forward to this one.

Oh well. I feel for those who put in hard work trying to make it happen.

But evidently Peters et al. overstepped. Can't do that.

Too close to the direction CBS have just approved for the New Series perhaps?

I was thinking the same then took it further to, they LIKED the idea and want to use it too. Could it wind up like this:

1) Sue Axanar

2) Settle out of court

3) Use the ideas in ST 2017

4) Axanar Team gets paid.........Doners get screwed.

Just passing evil thoughts in my head.......
Well, now you say that... Remember what happened with the StarTrekBeyond domain name? And how CBS/Paramount played nice with the fan who owned it? Supposedly humouring their Beyond pitch for a TV series in return? Subsequently got them to rename it, averting some legal ugliness in the process...

Not here. But just noticed Todd is the only one of the Prelude cast not listed on the Axanar (feature) imdb page.

Tom - you guys sweating bullets over there in Renegade land, or is it more "let's wait and see what happens"?

Well the other productions are not connected to Axanar so i would hope they would be ok
