Axanar found 100K to cut from their budget....

As has been stated before, Alex has been banned, Terry gave up and I don´t think Robert has an account here. I don´t think they even read this forum anymore- especially as they are probably deep in preparation for the shoot of the first half of Axanar. If you want to contact them, its much easier on the mentioned FB page.

But one incompatibility as far as sets goes is Axanar wants to retcon the idea of the TOS (or pre-TOS) universe to use LCARS rather than tactile buttons. They came out rather late in the game to tell us that the look of TOS, as beloved and nostalgic as it is to so many, is broken and needs fixing. This is diametrically opposed to the approach of Vic and James Cawley to recreate TOS in minute detail.

Not entirely. From the start they indicated a slightly more modern approach to the development of sets; they are making an independent movie rather than faithfully recreating TOS; some artistic license is a given.
To me the appeal of TOS is interesting stories in a historical era of television. The hyperdetailed set recreation is fine, but is by no means necessary unless you are placing your story on the original Enterprise.
There are worse things to nitpick about.

Nice to see Alec Peters get what is coming to him. Though I feel bad for the people who gave money to this swindle.

Could it be that Axanar raised too much money or is Paramount/CBS going to go after other fan productions?

They may have went after Axanar because they were using CBS IP to build a business. Seems like some people here saw this coming.

My impression is that this is aimed specifically at Axanar, but a general message is there nonetheless: watch your step.

Other fan productions have avoided crowing about "professional film standards" and being an "independent Star Trek production" even as they strive for better overall production standards. But Axanar made noises that sound like a direct challenge to the officially owned and made studio productions. That strikes me as an awfully stupid thing to do to people who allow you to exist at their leisure.

My speed reading of the legal document seems to suggest it's a template to shut down any and every fan production, as I guess they've always had the option to do so. Perhaps as others have said for ages, Axanar just pushed it too far and so they're being made an example of. Though it's hard to see how they can just close down Axanar on those grounds and not the others.

I would hate to see productions like STC get caught in the undertow, so I hope that the amount of money raised by Axanar and the production team's rather heady ambitions is what caught Paramount/CBS's eye.

Using CBS IP to raise funds to build your own "For Profit" business was a bad idea... Is it too late to ask for my money back?

IOW

"Sure, go ahead and make your fan film in your garage with cardboard sets - just don't raise millions of dollars and promote it as "professional". That's our job."

I'm also curious timing-wise whether someone at CBS legal might have seen the latest publicly-undisclosed budget, and perhaps that has prompted action?

Unfortunately, many people's projects will likely be damaged by this lawsuit because one asshole tried to make an unlicensed living off of Star Trek in the most public way possible.

It looks like Axanar's copyrights "Axanar Works" is Paramount's/CBS's biggest objection when I read through the complaint..

I think "Axanar Works" refers to what they've produced thus far and what they're going to produce with elements from CBS' IP.
