BB-8 Was Adorable (SPOILERS)

BB-8 was cute. But of course he was. Flipping the bird was pretty funny. Cute, too.

I'm very impressed with the technical execution.

On the down side, I have to admit that his sounds reminded me a bit of WALL-E.

There was only one spot I noticed on first viewing where I thought that BB-8 over-emoted, at one point when he hangs his head in dejection. R2 was much subtler than that in his emoting.

I don't have any major problems with the new droid, though.

Love R2, always will, but for me, his primary flaw in the OT, (and some parts of the PT not cg R2) was his lack of speed. Following people he could always be seen falling behind then <cut scene> he is suddenly caught up with the group, but falling behind again <cut scene> caught up... etc. Plus, navigating sand dunes?

No problem with BB8 keeping up, that I noticed. He could really haul ball! He is probably able to float, and swim with little retractable paddles.

Just a much better, all purpose design, imo.

But R2-D2 can fly!

:ducks thrown objects:

Sorry! Sorry!

You can certainly feel the Disney influence with BB-8, and that's fine with me! I've never liked any droid before him. R2D2 was rude, C3PO was annoying, and Chopper on Rebels is a jerk - surprising what with Disney. But BB-8 is freaking epic awesome cute! Love that little guy.

T3 from the first KOTOR game was cool, and then there was the assassination droid, (H8, or something?) in the same game.

I didn't get a Disney vibe from BB-8 but I see what you are saying.

I do not believe that BB8 was flipping the bird. It was emulating a behavior recently demonstrated by a human. BB8 has a childlike/petlike personality. For me, this is best demonstrated when BB8 returns to Poe Dameron.

The droids introduced after Disney took the reins - Chopper and BB8 - seem more emotive and reactive to their environments than R2-D2.

Indeed. And I consider myself pretty cynical, but I don't know how cynical you have to be to think BB8 was flipping the bird there. I mean, he just made an agreement with Fin, complied with it, and then made the "lighter gesture" right after Finn did the thumbs-up. And, yeah, considering its child/petlike behavior it was obviously mimicking the thumbs-up Finn just did.

But flipping the bird?! Really, people?!

I also thought BB-8 was mimicking Finn's gesture and the idea that he was doing anything else didn't even cross my mind until reading posts in this forum (and not even in this thread, but somewhere else first).

Somehow the expressions of BB8 were very cat/doglike.
I thought the same thing, which is just one of the many reasons why I love the character.

BB-8 isn't as innocent and naive as he may appear. Neal Scanlan, head of the creature shop that worked on the BB-8 design, said the following:

We always imagined BB-8 as being quite manipulative. I think he knows he’s cute. He knows that he can win people over. And he uses that like children do to get his own way. In this film, he has a very important mission that he has to accomplish and so he uses his personality, his coyness, and all of those things.

I am going to rewatch the film, but when I first saw it, I thought it was one of those playful flipping the bird moments. Seems like the majority took it a different way, so I'll look out for it. I still thought it was a cool moment though and I think it was that scene that I instantly loved him.

Isn't that the very definition of a cat? ;)
