BB-8 Was Adorable (SPOILERS)

Haven't seen that much talk about the new Droid so I figured we should talk about it. Going into the movie I was afraid BB-8 would only be there as a marketing device, kind of like Lightning McQueen from Cars. I mean most of the sales seemed to be around the Droid and it was marketed as a christmas gift for children.

As I was watching the movie, there was one thought I had about this new Droid, and that was he might be my favorite Droid in Star Wars now. I've always found C-3P0 annoying, and R2 was great of course, but there felt like more character in BB-8. I smiled every time that thing was on the screen and I like that it's the new R2 for the new series of films.

What were your thoughts on the Droid marketed to children.

I never really liked R2D2 and especially C3PO much. I thought they were often too silly and I hope C3PO's role will stay really tiny.

But BB-8 is just so adorable. :adore:
The "thumbs up" was a little too much maybe but I even enjoyed that one so no complaints from me. BB-8 was cute and good fun even for an adult.

I thought the "thumbs up" actually looked more like "flipping the bird," showing BB-8 wasn't too happy about giving up the "need-to-know" information to a couple of people who normally wouldn't need to know it.

I thought so too and that got a chuckle out of me.

Yeah, that was my take as well.

I remember being impressed with a BB-8's expressiveness on the fly. In ways I felt it was more emotionally communicative suggesting more emotion and confusion interpreting what humans want from them in this new generation of droids. The thumbs up confusion or the instant concern If Rey was going to sell him out for the avalanche of food rations. These type of on the fly instant reactions made him feel more human than 3PO and R2. Where 3PO in confusion seeks guidance, I really felt BB-8 was trying to feel out what Fin wanted like in the thumbs up moment. Keep trying different things till you get it right. For some reason to me this is a self initiative quality 3PO and R2 lacked and is something these new Droids have the old ones lacked...a sense of right and wrong that exceeds simple programming.

I don't know why, but I got a huge kick out of simply watching him try to keep up with Rey and Finn as they were on the run from the TIE fighters early on. The way he had his head down and was rolling around obstacles was just really fun to see and really made you want to root for him. :D

I wasn't that impressed with BB-8 in the run up to TFA but I liked him in the film. He's no R2 or Threepio but still not a bad little guy.

Artoo will always be my main man, but BB was not obnoxiously cute like I feared he would be. So thumbs up.

I loved BB-8, almost want to get the little app-driven one but I can't justify having it.

Not sure why anyone saw his lighter-gesture as him "flipping the bird." First of all, does such a gesture exist in the SW universe?

Secondly, he seemed to be going along with Finn's plan/suggestion and he did it as an immediate response to Finn's thumbs up, so it it seemed clear to me BB8 was imitating that gesture the only way he could, and he only had one handy device he could extend and "point." Besides, BB8 didn't seem that "cynical" enough for a "middle finger" gesture.

I loved the way it latched onto Rey sort of like a lost puppy and even expressed nervousness wen Rey was talking to junk dealer about selling him (it.)

Amazing how "expressive" they made the thing...

Why did it need to tether itself to the walls of the spinning Falcon? Wouldn't the Falcon's artificial gravity had locked it to the floor the same way it was to Finn and Rey along with negating any acceleration effects?

I was thinking it was a thumbs up gesture in response to Finn's thumbs up. I get the feeling BB-8 plays wingman for Poe sometimes and that was the natural reaction to Finn's attempt to keep Rey impressed. BB-8 is bro, I guess.

Honestly, BB-8 made no real impression on me. I don't hate him, but R2 is the Droid to me, and nothing's going to change that.

I really love Artoo (and all R-series astromechs), so I kinda feel guilty as to how much I love BB-8! Way too cute!

And did anyone else notice the sound it made when it sometimes hit the ground hard? Sounded like a playground kickball to me!

Somehow the expressions of BB8 were very cat/doglike.

Even the "thumbs up" is a specific Earth gesture (which doesn't even have a positive meaning in every culture).

He was ok but I am still a R2 fan. Seeing R2 at the bottom of the cliff waiting by the Falcon with Chewbacca and shifting shifting from one leg to the other in waiting for Luke was probably the best moment for R2 and in my mind eclipsed anything bb8 did. That scene showed just how much R2 reveres his owner and missed him.

BB-8 was really a character to me, with a very distinct personality. His reactions to the events happening around him were funny, sad and just really touching.
