What will Luke Skywalker do in the next movies? SPOILERS

I thought it was very interesting that TFA did not show us Luke speaking or taking his light saber from Rey when she extends it to him. I suspect that the movies are going to try to keep us in suspense in terms of whether or not Luke will join the fight. I am guessing that initially, Luke will refuse and claim non-interference in the affairs of the galaxy but then realize that he must get involved. I also fully expect to see an epic light saber duel between Luke Skywalker, going full Jedi, and Emperor Snokes, who will be revealed to be a some super powerful sith lord that only Luke has a chance of stopping. I also fully expect to see Luke training Rey and then she takes on a fully trained Kylo Ren in another epic light saber duel.

I hope it's not just rehasing Yoda/Luke relationship. I want Luke to actually return with Rey and get involved again.

I'm thinking they go for the Obi-wan training Luke angle that they lost when they killed him off in the first film. Either way, you have a strange old hermit training the young hero. The question will be...is Luke off his rocker at all? Will he still be the Luke Skywalker we remember at the end of Return of the Jedi? He has had his major failure, like Obi-wan had...and to some extend Yoda had. Now we need to see if Luke is ready to train a Jedi again after his failure with Solo.

And the question needs answering. Is Luke Skywalker Rey's father. And if so, who is her mother?

Will an old EU favorite prove to be the mother of Rey? Or will that be glossed over, much like Luke and Leia's mother for basically the entire OT.

Yeah, Obi-Wan wasn't planning on dying no doubt and was gonna return to help the Rebellion. I'd like Luke to do the same, and he is no doubt knowledgeable about Snoke and the events unexplored or unknown to Leia.

No, I think Obi-Wan knew it was his time to go, Vader even told Tarkin that escape wasn't his plan. Obi-Wan knew he had to face Vader one more time, he even looked at Luke before saluting Vader with his saber. There was a symmetry to their final meeting on the Death Star, at least to me there was.

In Lucas' original script, Obi-wan lived, but did nothing but stand around for the last act of the movie. So to give Luke more of a push, he killed off Obi-wan on the Death Star. (when it was going to be just one movie)

When it came time to make The Empire Strikes Back, suddenly there were all these training scenes that were for Obi-wan, but he was dead. So Lucas has to make up a new Jedi Master, which we got Yoda in a brilliant risk of believing a puppet can work.

I know, but what happened onscreen is all that matters and Obi-Wan knew what was going to happen.

I mean when he got that hologram from Leia, Luke's parents had died etc etc he didn't expect to end up dead a few hours later. I think when he sensed Vader, he knew it was time to confront him and buy time for Luke to escape and that he still knew Yoda was alive.

That's hard to call, he told Luke he needed him that he couldn't do it alone. Who really knows how much of his own future the Force had revealed to him. Plus he had learned to communicate with Qui-Gon as Yoda told him. I'd say he knew his time was at end no matter what.

Given that Hamill is looking a lot thinner now even than he did during the filming of TFA, I get the impression he'll probably have a much more active role in the sequels. And will be doing a lot more than just training Rey on his little island before sending her off again.

Whatever the case, I really do love this new backstory they've created for Luke, and how he started out training a new generation of Jedi (much like how we always expected) before everything went horribly wrong and he ended up repeating the same mistakes Obi-Wan made when training Anakin. Only this time it was with Han and Leia's son, which obviously must have made it even more painful for him.

What I'm really hoping to see for the sequels is Luke and Rey training and going into battle together (much like Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in TPM) to defeat Kylo and Snoke. And that Luke won't just be playing the mentor or Yoda role in the background while Rey does all the actual fighting.

I stopped reading the Star Wars EU when the first Yuuzan Vong book came out - I didn't dig it and my interest in SW had waned after Ep I - but didn't Luke do this in the books? I swear he went off into hiding.

There were periods in the books where Luke went off on his own. There were the Barbara Hambly books, and I think it was in the Black Fleet Crisis he went off in search of his mother.

If he hasn't found the Jedi Temple yet, then I figure Luke, Rey, Chewie & R2 go in search of it aboard the Falcon. You might get some training of Rey, but I don't think it will be a retread of Luke/Yoda. More mental training, less physical. First and foremost, Luke was trained to be a weapon to kill Vader and the Emperor. Rey will be trained in a less combative/physical way and in more of a spiritual way methinks. Regardless, I really hope we get to see Luke find the Jedi Temple and some Jedi Holocrons next episode.

I was going to wonder if he had his old X-wing, but he didn't have R2 with him.

Having them have the Falcon though does leave it open to them having a nice adventure while Poe, Finn, and Leia go do something else. (or whoever they cast as the second new female lead to go off with Poe and Finn while Rey's busy).

Isn't the very title of this thread a Spoiler, since it gives away that Luke's around for the next movie?

I never thought about that. You don't see a ship on that island or whatever it is either. I suppose it could be hidden somewhere. Seriously, just what the hell was Luke doing standing on that hill by himself anyway? Some shrooms? It reminds me of the time Rom and Quark are crawling around DS9 and end up coming out in Sisko's office... and Sisko is just sitting there doing absolutely nothing
