Does Simon Pegg do an accurate Scottish accent?

How does Simon Pegg's portrayal of a Scottish human compare with that of James Doohan? I would figure that Pegg does a reasonable accent since A. he's from next door England as opposed to across the ocean Canada and B. he's been hired for big-budget 21st century globally-reaching movies, but I don't know much about identifying specific British accents. Can any board members from the UK answer this for me?

Pegg is British. So he likely does a better accent than Doohan.

Plus like many countries there are many Scottish accents not just the one, so the real question is who does the best accent from where Scotty is from?

If I remember right, Pegg's wife is Scottish so likely she would kill him (obviously not literally) if he absolutely butchered it.

I am Scottish. Pegg's accent is as good as Doohan's. Take that how you will.

Both versions of Scotty have accurate 23rd-century regional Scottish accents.

If Scotty is supposed to be from Aberdeen then Peggs's softer lilt is probably more accurate. Doohan sounds more Weegie.

To speak with a true Doric sounding accent though, it would require that the audience occasionally hasn't got a fucking clue what's being said.

So what you're saying is we need Robin Williams on the Enterprise?

I think it's an adequate accent but not something that will win prizes in authenticity. Doohan is better but he wouldn't win any great prizes either. Even within England accents are very diverse and can be difficult for other regions to simulate. It can be more intuitive to simulate the American accent given that TV and film abounds in American stuff.

Pegg strikes me as a guy who is parodying Scott, frankly. With me, it's a perfect storm of my familiarity of Pegg as a comedian and the frivolous clowning around he does in alot of scenes in these JJ films.

I have a friend who is Scottish, and Pegg's accent does sound quiet like hers. But apparently whenever she goes back home, she's mocked for her Australian accent. So...

    I kinda lumped Doohan's accent in with Chekov's. It's not a Scottish accent, it's a Soctty accent.

Mike Myers is another Canadian (like Doohan). How was his Scottish accent in the 2nd Austin Powers movie (Fat Bastard) and in So I Married An Axe Murderer (Stuart MacKenzie)?

All I know is, my Scottish relation are virtually speaking gibberish for the first few minutes until my ears adjust.

I would consider his accent as "close enough." Of course, as Kor pretty much said, as far as we know his accent is perfectly in line with the 23rd century Scottish accent. I do believe that such an accent would change, as the world is likely far more unified linguistically by the 23rd century. Look what radio and television has done just in the past 100 years!

That is true, allthough we'll all probably be speaking Indo-Chinese by the 23rd Century.

I don't think it's a parody, but the accent makes it seem over the top. In fact he's playing basically the same character he does in the Mission Impossible movies.

I don't like his accent. It does sound like a parody as stated above and not like any Scottish accent I know.
