The First Trailer

Elba's voiceover suggests another possibility - the Federation has run into a civilization that has zero interest in providing a "final frontier" and room for colonial expansion and is capable of smacking them down hard. :)

Which is a truly amazing, new and interesting idea. The closest we got to this was The Dominion.

Well, the Gorn didn't seem too keen on sharing in "Arena". :techman:

My problem is turning Trek into strictly a spectacle franchise. That's how this trailer feels to me.

I have a tough time making that determination based on 84 seconds of snippets put in front of The Force Awakens.

Though I'm okay with spectacle movies, There is room in the universe for lots of different types of Star Trek.

Yeah. Not every movie needs to be the second coming of Shakespeare.

The team works together to overcome overwhelming odds, far away from any help from Starfleet.

Nah, that doesn't sound like TOS at all.

I'm in. Doubly so because of the trailer music, which was perfect. Triply so because of the mid-air transporter shenanigans.

Yeah, not sure we've ever seen that before. Thousands of interconntected ballistic/kinetic objects turning enemies to confetti.

Even Vengeance couldn't deal with that many targets at once, her saucer would be gone in seconds.

This should be good.

Edit: In that last cap, where we see the severed nacelle, is that another Federation ship in the distance being attacked too?

As I and others have said, this is a trailer designed for general audiences going and seeing a Star Wars movie.

Funnily enough, all the Star Wars trailers were less "actiony" than this one...

They're also playing up the Star Wars nostalgia. With bits like

"There has been an awakening... Have you felt it?
"The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power too."
"Chewie... we're home"
and
The entire "It's true... Alll of it" exchange.

That is not in question.

But it is possible that a significant amount of action scenes are seen in the Trek trailer, which has, for the most part over the past 50 years (particularly the last 28) been a little lower key.

For everyone who hates the trailer and the movie because of it:

1. I just watched the trailer again specifically for lens flare. I didn't notice any! No lens flare! Yay! Can we at least praise that?

2. I found a ScreenRant post calling it "Star Trek Beyond Comprehension." See what they did there? Maybe you could have some creative fun like that.

3. Finally, I'll bet TPTB are immensely pleased by the traffic their trailer is generating. "There's no such thing as bad publicity." If you hate the trailer and the film, the best way to annoy the people who made it is to not care at all. You're just feeding into their plans. ;)

In Ender's Game we've got an insectoid swarm attacking Earth. And I recall Bob Orci as a producer of that movie. Is that where he came up with the swarm-attack idea?

I rather liked that trailer.

I get why people are upset or don't feel this is a Trek movie. But if anyone thinks we'll every see an ambitious and serious science fiction Trek film like TMP anytime soon, they're kidding themselves.

I really loved ST09 and liked STID (although that one doesn't hold up well with repeat viewings). Beyond at least looks like a lot of fun and seems to actually add something to the Trek universe instead of parasitizing it as STID did.

I really like uhura's hair. zoe looks really pretty but I just hope this film delivers, regardless of fans reception of the trailer I would not have traded JJ Abrams for any other director. good luck justin and good luck to the cast, I hope the film is a sucess both critically and commercially.

I agree. I love TMP and just watched it last night. But it isn't the future of the franchise.

My first reaction: this is not Star Trek.

It didn't give me any Star Trek feeling at all and that for a franchise that celebrates its 50th anniversary next year.

I'm not a big Star Wars fan, but the trailer for The Force Awakens left me wanting for more and left me with feelings of nostalgia.

The trailer for Star Trek Beyond left me feeling empty.

One or two good things: Karl Urban of course and it seems earth finally isn't in danger.

The rest, meh. Anyone claiming this trailer feels like TOS should have their heads examined.

And I'm all for change btw. Star Trek Beyond shouldn't be The Voyage Home or First Contact, but should feel like Star Trek and it really doesn't.
