The First Trailer

To answer the previous question, I do believe it insults the intelligence of the viewers to produce a trailer that consists of non-stop action, explosions, and witty repartee. It communicates to the audience that the marketers assume that intellectual engagement, depth of character, theme, and a slower pace are not to our liking. It treats us like Roman citizens at a gladiator fight, as if we're all frothing at the mouths just waiting for the next adrenaline rush. Again, I am not assuming I know everything about this film I haven't seen yet. I am commenting on the trailer, and why it offends me, and what I believe it suggests about the likely tone of the movie.

It is an 84-second trailer. I think you're reading too much into it.

Isn't that the very definition of fandom, my friend?

Elba's voiceover suggests another possibility - the Federation has run into a civilization that has zero interest in providing a "final frontier" and room for colonial expansion and is capable of smacking them down hard. :)

Made it a great deal less pompous and a little more entertaining.

I have no issue with making Trek "less pompus." I like Trek 2009. This simply feels like watching an ADHD sugar rush.

A BIG +1!

That was the thing I missed the most during the Berman years. So much of Star Trek was just dry and simply not entertaining.

I'm a TOS and OG movies fan. I've never been particularly fond of latter day Berman Trek. Action, and entertainment value are not my problem. My problem is turning Trek into strictly a spectacle franchise. That's how this trailer feels to me.

Picard is as iconic that is why we have the kirk vs picard: who is the better captain debate.

That "debate" started as early as 1987 on usenet as a vehicle for TOS fans to one-up and troll TNG fans.

It persists and has gone through myriad back-and-forth iterations only because fans can never let go of any argument. ;)

Picard might be as iconic for people who grew up with TNG. But in the final analysis, it's Kirk to be known in any other generation.

I have a tough time making that determination based on 84 seconds of snippets put in front of The Force Awakens.

Though I'm okay with spectacle movies. There is room in the universe for lots of different types of Star Trek.

As a fan of nu!Trek, I've only got one issue with this trailer: the music. It does not mesh with the visuals at all. If we got orchestral music instead of whatever song they used, it'd be really cool. I hope future trailers get better music. For the movie itself, I think it will be fine.

Then again, I said the same thing about The Last Airbender, so I could be totally wrong.

ST09 had a lot of action AND had a lot of pretty solid character moments. I mean, hell, the opening scene of that movie was about as actiony as you can get, and I was still crying when George Kirk went to his death.

So it's certainly possible to do both.

Well, but the truth is that there are a lot of youth who will like the fast paced action trailer. So studios are not wrong to "pander" to them. That does not mean that all moviegoers are dumb and just like explosions.

I'm 44 and I like fast-paced trailers.

Of course, there are people who are not "youths" anymore who also like fast paced trailers. This just proves my point even better. There are a lot of moviegoers who like fast paced trailers. It does not make them dumb. And it does not mean that people who like fast paced trailers don't also like intelligent movies. There is nothing wrong with a fast paced trailer since it will appeal to a lot of movie goers. The idea that a Star Trek trailer has to be slow and boring in order to prove that the movie will be intelligent, is ludicrous.

Which is a truly amazing, new and interesting idea. The closest we got to this was The Dominion.

As I and others have said, this is a trailer designed for general audiences going and seeing a Star Wars movie. It's supposed to feel that way. But you can base what a movie is about just by 85 seconds. The two biggest thing I've taken away from it? It's going to be fun. And a return to form to TOS... but with a much bigger budget!

And that has me interested.

I would have to rate this as the second best teaser trailer in Star Trek, behind ST09's teaser. I also think ST09's award-wining 3rd trailer is the best ST trailer ever, so we'll see if they can surpass it.

This trailer did absolutely nothing for me. Aside from the moment with McCoy being left alone, I didn't find anything remotely interesting about it. Just seemed like a bunch of mindless action-for-the-sake-of-action sequences, which I personally find boring and obnoxious. I'm hoping it's just because this is more of a teaser than a trailer. A little more flavor of plot would be nice. Hopefully that's coming with the next trailer.
