The First Trailer

And how does a trailer that is fast paced with a lot of action in it, "insult the audience"?
It is the thought and assumption that cynical studios pander to the youth demographic, believing they will pay for anything with big explosions without concern for intellectual content or ideals.

Kirk crashed his step-dad's vintage car in Star Trek, and now is crashing a motorcycle. His personal auto insurance must be through the roof.

KIRK: Are you afraid of cars?
SPOCK: Not at all, Captain. It's your driving that alarms me.

Dad died young. This Jim Kirk wasn't a Starfleet brat, moving often (probably from world to world). So he got into cars/motorcycles at a young age.

Picard is as iconic that is why we have the kirk vs picard: who is the better captain debate.

That has really subsided since TNG went off the air twenty-plus years ago.

Agreed, when TNG was on the air, it, and its influence in popular culture were pretty huge, at least relatively speaking. Everyone knew Picard, Data, etc.

However, once TNG went off the air, it dropped like a rock. The original crew really is what is most remembered.

Outfuckingstanding!

It's the perfect trailer for what it's going to be. Thursday is probably going to go down as the biggest geek-out night of the last 30 years, and that's even if TFA ends up being another Menace. It's also what has been (for lack of a better term) Star Trek's biggest rival all these decades.

Other trailers bound to be shown that night are Rogue One and ID4-2. The former is just more Star Wars, and the latter is what Star Trek will be directly competing with for box office. Three space adventure movies.

Paramount couldn't just copy the Star Wars trailers because all that would do is remind people it's still in second place. So instead they're going for a juxtaposition in tone and scope from the ID4 trailer and copying some ideas from the big space adventure movie.

They took a few action shots, added some (now classic) popular music, and spliced in a genuine laugh out loud moment in the middle. It's very safe and by-the-numbers. But it serves its purpose: that is, to remind people that there is a Star Trek movie coming out in seven months by the Fast and Furious guy with help from the same guy directing the movie you're about to see.

I doubt it is at all representative of the tone, drama, and theme of the film. And there will be a much more "serious" trailer in front of one of the May films and definitely TMNT2, if there isn't one as early as DoJ.

A classic false binary - what's the assumption here, that the "Trek fan" likes thoughtful drama, and the "mainstream viewer" is a dumb-dumb who likes explosions? That's just not true. Gravity and Interstellar and The Martian were geared to regular audiences, but those movies (and their trailers, more to the point) did not insult the intelligence of the viewer by assuming that all mainstream viewers want is action fun.

And how does a trailer that is fast paced with a lot of action in it, "insult the audience"? It does not.

I am not asking for a trailer (or movie) geared to "Trek fans." I am asking for one geared to mature and thoughtful adults. There is no reason for a production company to assume that the "broad base of viewers" are action-lovers with the attention span of a goldfish.
And how do you know that Star Trek Beyond won't be a mature and thoughtful movie for adults?

Shhhh.... you're going to set off the "Logic and Reason Alarm!"

Am I being illogical? Am I being unreasonable? Why? How? I've said over and over in this thread that I do not know what this film is going to end up being, and I am merely making assumptions based on what the marketers of this film want us to believe the film is going to be like. For the fifth time in this thread, I do NOT know this film is not going to be a mature and thoughtful movie for adults. I do not believe it is LIKELY to be one, based on the marketing, and the previous 3 films. There is nothing illogical about making hypotheses about products based on the marketing of that product. I am MORE than happy to have my hypothesis proven wrong on this one, believe me.

To answer the previous question, I do believe it insults the intelligence of the viewers to produce a trailer that consists of non-stop action, explosions, and witty repartee. It communicates to the audience that the marketers assume that intellectual engagement, depth of character, theme, and a slower pace are not to our liking. It treats us like Roman citizens at a gladiator fight, as if we're all frothing at the mouths just waiting for the next adrenaline rush. Again, I am not assuming I know everything about this film I haven't seen yet. I am commenting on the trailer, and why it offends me, and what I believe it suggests about the likely tone of the movie.

Dude, calm down. It was a joke.

This is my problem with fandom these days. Everyone seems to have lost their fucking senses of humor. It's not all serious all the time. But everyone has to be. There's a lot of humor in life, in fandom and in Star Trek. To quote MASH's Sidney Freedman: "Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice."

Then there's the thought and assumption that Star Trek ever presented intellectual content and ideals worth a mature adult's concern.

Interesting! I get the impression Boutella plays the local loner/sage who sees the bigger picture of what's happening (e.g. her "I know why you are all here" comment). I wonder what she and Scotty are looking at around the 1:09 mark. Scotty certainly is speechless.

Still a mystery is the other crashed ship (Yorktown). There's a scene of something crashed (?) in Dubai at 0:55, but no starship visible.

Lastly, people shouldn't get so up in arms about the Beastie Boys tune. It's likely not what is played in the actual scene. Trailer music is added by the (outsourced) company that makes the trailer, not the actual production company.

It is an 84-second trailer. I think you're reading too much into it.

Well, but the truth is that there are a lot of youth who will like the fast paced action trailer. So studios are not wrong to "pander" to them. That does not mean that all moviegoers are dumb and just like explosions.

I'm 44 and I like fast-paced trailers.

I will say this does finally seem at least less villain-focused than the past three films. It looks a bit more like it's shooting for something along the lines of Insurrection or Star Trek V, in that we do get to see an alien civilization and some kind of revolt perhaps, but hopefully better realized than in those films. It looks lighter and a bit more problem-solving than villain-killing, so it looks promising. I'm cautiously optimistic that this might finally feel a bit more like TV Trek, but with movie Trek action and over-sized emotion. I noticed that Orci, McKay, and Payne are still credited, so I wonder how much of their script is still there. I'd guess possibly the rough story or at least the premise, but possibly less.

That "debate" started as early as 1987 on usenet as a vehicle for TOS fans to one-up and troll TNG fans.

It persists and has gone through myriad back-and-forth iterations only because fans can never let go of any argument. ;)

It's just a trailer, obviously. A couple minutes out of a movie two hours long, so obviously there's a lot missing.

But this trailer definitely doesn't excite me. I was hoping for a more thoughtful film, not just a bunch of random action scenes. I typically avoid action movies because they're usually boring.

Why wouldn't it be? It's already been established it's Kirk's favorite song.

And since when was listening to the Beastie Boys considered a bad thing? Is it just because they're popular? Never mind License to Ill is pretty universally considered one of the best albums of the last 30 years, if not all time.

Pure speculation but I wonder if the planet does not have some special resource or something that both Starfleet and the Swarm covet. It would explain her comment about knowing why they are here. And she says "all", presumably referring to both Starfleet and the Swarm.

Starfleet may have stumbled into the situation after the attack on the Starbase we see.
