The First Trailer

Seems like this timeline's Kirk is going to be put in the position of someone like Ron Tracey from "The Omega Glory". Stuck in a no-win situation as far as the Prime Directive goes, with no help from Starfleet Command.

Can't wait!

I've been watching Star Trek since 1975 and I love this trailer. It screams TOS to me.

Concur. This is a youthful crew running around on a weird planet planet while strange things try and capture/kill them. Beyond seems like it could be plopped right into the second season.

And complaining about motorcycles is like complaining that they used bow and arrow in Friday's Child, sometimes the crew will just have to make do with what's at hand.

Well, having just watched the trailer for "Star Trek: Fast & Beyond Furious" all I can say is .... uhm.... motorcycles? Really? WTF??

What is the deal with the motorcycle? Have they outlawed the wheel in the future? I had the same "what the fuck?" reaction to people criticizing the Argo in Nemesis.

Assuming the motorcycle uses the standard Earth engine of the 20th century, I doubt there would be any petrol around in the time period in which Star Trek is set, something no one seemed to point out when Pine was riding a bike in Star Trek 2009.

Your right. I mean, it's not like they can come up with an alternative to petrol, right? That's just crazy talk.

Why would you assume this?

Shock, surprise. The Fast and Furious guy gives us Fast and Furious in space. Well, at least they can't dumb Trek down any more.

That was exciting. I like flash and bang and shock and awe and things exploding. I'm an action adventure junkie...and dammit Chris Pine is good looking. Have to get the super shallow stuff out of the way.

But I also like Star Trek. I've been around the block enough times to know that a trailer does not a movie make. I'll wait and see if there are enough of those beloved elements that make up a good Trek story before I condemn it.

But in the meantime...explosions! Light shows! Doctor McCoy! ;)

The same for First Contact's trailers. In fact, the first teaser borrowed ship battle scenes from other parts of Star Trek!

Some context for some who are having negative reactions to the feel of the trailer, we need to keep in mind this trailer was designed to premiere in front of Star Wars for its fans, not to pander to our corner of the interwebs.

Exactly. It's a bit too soon to condemn the movie on the basis of their marketing scheme.

Ef's I cin git muh majic mony card to work, I's will see it more thin enuf fer buth ov us!

Well that was certainly a trailer. About what I expected. Oh well, at least the new TV show will be out soon.

Gee, I don't know, maybe no one pointed it out because they assumed that since this was the 23rd century, Kirk's bike probably had some other power source than gas?

My reaction, "This is Star Trek?"

I think I am seeing what Paramount believes is the course the franchise will be pursuing in the future - a frenetic, moment-to-moment action film. Will CBS follow in its footsteps? We shall see.

A question - if there were not elements of Star Trek in the film, is there anything in the trailer that would differentiate this film from the average action film?

When Guardians makes 775 million and Star Trek doesn't, expect the later to look like the former.

This look like a 2016 movies just as TMP, TVH, and FC resemble the 70s, 80s and 90s.

For all the people saying it will be dumbed down solely because Justin Lin directed F&F movies before, here is an excerpt from an interview he did earlier this year. He grew up on TOS.

"Why did Lin exit a thriving franchise in The Fast & The Furious for a Star Trek franchise still trying to reach that commerce level? “I was in the last week shooting True Detective when JJ Abrams called last December,” Lin said. “He asked me, do you like Star Trek? If you do, you should take this, be bold, and just go for it.’ ” Unbeknownst to Abrams — who was leaving to direct the revival of Star Wars — he called the right guy. “I thought about how much a part of my life Star Trek was,” Lin said. “Growing up, my parents had this little fish and chips restaurant in Anaheim in the shadows of Disneyland, and they didn’t close until 9 PM. As a family, we didn’t eat dinner until 10 PM, and we would watch the original Star Trek every night at 11. My dad worked 364 days a year, only took Thanksgiving off, and from age 8 to 18, the only time I could hang out with my parents was by staying late. And every night, it was Star Trek on Channel 13 in L.A. That was my childhood. All my friends were Star Wars kids but I didn’t go to the movies, so I was the Star Trek kid. Thinking about this, it became a very personal and very emotional decision.” Then it became a blur. “On Fast 6, we had a year turnaround and that was crazy. This one gave us six months to get ready, which makes it like an incredibly expensive indie movie.”"

I don't want to be that guy but I have to be honest in my reactions... What the f*** did they do to Star Trek!?

...

There was a bit here and there that was interesting, but...

...Assuming the Enterprise get's blowed up early on, and we spend the film basically planet side with the crew scattered about, i'm thinking there's a possibility they might pull a Skyfall and pull the ol "Austin Martin" trick. It is the 50th, and this series of films has been very fan servicey up to this point. It wouldn't surprise me if the JJprise get's smashed just so they can build something more retro looking.

I like the new alien designs. The transporter effect is cool, actually rather reminds me of the effect from "Enterprise." The uniforms look good. AND I do like that we're spending more time on an alien planet and we're way out from Earth.
Actually, the Enterprise gets Punctured to Death...
By thousands of tiny pin pricks...
All Over Her Body!

No sexual innuendo there... nope none at all...

And it's Blown Up, not Blowed Up...
THAT would be an X-Rated Trek Movie!
<chuckle>
